Public Service Announcement
***
Two more really great midi pages were shut down this month and
another two are threatening to follow. Why? Because unscrupulous
people or ignorant souls who know no better were linking to the files on them directly, were what I
term "file poaching." The consequences of using a file by linking to it directly
rather than taking it and uploading it to your own server are several. For you, it is
just a very slow load while the file is functional and an embarassing hole where you once had a
picture or sound should the original site alter the filename or delete it. For the
original site, however, your theft in this manner causes slow down, inaccessibility, or even
corruption to their own files which can even affect their server, causing the person to lose their
website and, of course, the goodwill they have built being on line for the public.
The campaign is on to find web thieves of this kind. Please, if you know someone
who does this on a regular basis, set them straight. If you yourself are guilty, please
stop. While some of us ask for credit for the files we create, few of us object if you
take a file with or without attribution for personal use. You will note that I do it
here with all the midi files I use (I am no musician) and with the art I use from other people
although I do make some effort to cite sources and artists. It's not because I am
trying to impress you with my knowledge, rather I want to share with you the names of those we
should thank for work that delights the eye or ear and to direct you where you may obtain similar
works. However, deliberately inhibiting the ability of a website to serve others just
to save myself some space is not something I do. It is not just rude, it is selfish in
the extreme. So please, join the campaign to stop file poaching. -- Angel-Pie
