JLMC 201 Lab 4 May 23-May 24 |
1. Due Tuesday, May 29: Write a memo to Dr. Bulla to be used as background for a personality profile about you. Focus on one angle that will give the classmate writing your profile a way to get started on the feature article. I will put you in pairs by Wednesday, Feb. 1. Memorandum format was given out in class this past week. Don't forget to put MEMORANDUM at the top of your business letter in all-caps and centered, and then tab your to, from, re and date lines. Make sure you initial your from line. 2. The Inverted Pyramid is the term journalists use when they talk about hard-news leads that put the most important information at the top. These are ideal for breaking news and stories that don't need a lot of analysis. Read the crime reports in the Daily, Tribune and Register for classic examples of the inverted pyramid. 3. Our lab this week will be the writing of hard news with quotes. We will go over your practice for Lab 4 -- the hotel robbery story. Emphasis will be on using proper direct-quote attribution. Our verb of choice is SAID. 4. Lab 4: Write a new story with multiple sources. Use a blind summary lead, prefer one-sentence paragraphs, inverted pyramid and AP style. Make sure you mention the source twice, as in "according to an Ames Police Department report." Second reference can be "according to the report." Direct quote verb is "said." If you have already identified the person being quoted, then it is "Jones said." If it is first reference, then it is "said Jane Jones, a junior in advertising." After you finish, print your story and proofread it. Be skeptical about all proper nouns and any unusual usages. Proofread backwards, from the last word to the first, bottom to top. 5. Fill out grade grid. Keep up with your grade in this class. 6. Sign up for an individual conference with Dr. Bulla. 7. Current events quiz for extra credit. Please read the newspapers daily. 8. Keep up with your readings. Here are guides for Chapters 3 and 5 of Rich. |
