Smith's Jorell Webb finished 41st in last week's NCHSAA 3-A state championships. Webb earned a slot in this weekend's Foot Locker Southeast Regionals at McAlpine Greenway Park. Earlier, Webb had finished 13th in the NCHSAA 3-A regionals. Webb, an all-conference runner, is a junior.
The Smith boys' cross country team finished a single point out of first Wednesday in the Piedmont Triad 3-A meet at Hagan-Stone Park.
The Golden Eagles had one less point than champion Western Guilford, which successfully defended its PTC crown. The Hornets totaled 40 points, while the second-place Eagles had 41.
Andres Covarrubias finished first for BLS. Covarrubias ran a 17:58 over the 3.1-mile course to finish 10 seconds behind Western's Kurt Schuller. Smith's Jorell Webb finished sixth in 18:26.
Covarrubias and Webb both made all-conference.
The Golden Eagles will take part in the regionals next week.
Meanwhile, the BLS soccer team nearly clinched a NCHSAA 3-A playoff berth with a 12-0 win over Dudley. If Smith (6-4, 7-6-1) wins its last two games over Carver, it will advance to the playoffs.
The girls' volleyball team lost in three games to Southern Alamance in the first round of the state playoffs. Smith's volleyball team finished 11-9.
The Smith boys' soccer team got its second critical win in three days Saturday by defeating Glenn 6-4 in Kernersville.
Smith (5-3, 5-5-1) still has a strong chance to make the state 3-A playoffs with a week left in the regular season. The Golden Eagles host second-ranked Southwest Guilford tonight at 7 o'clock.

Mark Smith and Brian Woodward scored two goals each for Smith, which plays at Glenn Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Golden Eagles improved to 4-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the conference.
Meawnhile, Smith's football team hosts Glenn tonight in a key conference battle. The two teams are part of a three-way tie with Carver for first place in the Piedmont Triad Conference. The Smith JV football team lost to Glenn 25-20 Thursday night. The Golden Eagles host Southwest next Thursday at 6:30.
Jorell Webb and Andres Covarrubias each broke the 18-minute barrier Tuesday as Smith defeated Parkland 18-43 in cross country action.
The win ensured Smith a second-place finish behind Western Guilford in the regular season Piedmont Triad Conference.
Webb turned in a personal best 17:42 over the 3.1-mile course, while Covarrubias had a season's best 17:46.
Smith's Mike Free finished fourth in 19:36, followed by teammate Gandhy Torrellas in fifth place, also in 19:36. Reggie Wynn was sixth in 19:52.
Meanwhile, Smith's soccer match at Glenn was postponed Wednesday night because of rain. It will be made up Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Golden Eagle JV football team (2-1, 4-2) will play at Glenn today at 6:30 p.m.
The Smith volleyball team spoiled Western Guilford's senior night celebration Thursday night, downing the Lady Hornets in four games.
The Lady Eagles posted a 15-9, 15-4, 12-15, 15-11 win over Western, which had beaten BLS at Smith last month.
It was the first win over Western by a BLS volleyball team in 10 years. Smith (8-4, 9-7) finished the regular season in second place in the Piedmont Triad Conference and advanced to the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs for the first time since 1997.
Smith turned in its best regular season since 1996.
Two Golden Eagles were named to the all-conference team, seniors Jackie Wood and Amy Cazel.
The JV volleyball team also won, in two games. Smith's JVs finished 9-3 in the league and 11-5 overall. The JVs also took second place.
Meanwhile, the soccer match between Smith and Carver at Manzi Stadium Thursday night was postponed because the referee did not show up. The two teams scrimmaged for 40 minutes and will make up the match next week in a doubleheader.
Shaquinta Platt and Rebecca Dimondstein advanced to the NCHSAA 3-A Eastern Regional tennis tournament Monday.
Platt and Dimondstein combined for an 11-1 record in doubles to finish as conference co-champions at No. 1. Both Smith players were also named all-conference.
Platt finished the season as the Piedmont Triad 3-A's second place No. 1 singles player with a record of 10-2. Her only losses were to league champion Mary Alice Grube.
Dimondstein, who finished with a 5-7 record at No. 2 singles, was able to advance to the regionals through the consolation bracket at Monday's conference tournament.
First-year coach Chris Spence will take the Golden Eagles to the regionals next Saturday at Burlington Tennis Center. First-round matches begin at 9 a.m.
"It was a good conference tournament for us," Spence said. "Karen Dove and Tran Trieu played well and came within one win of advancing to the regionals."
Western went on a scoring spree Monday night in Piedmont Triad 3-A soccer action at Manzi Stadium.
The Hornets posted a 9-5 victory over the Golden Eagles, who did get four goals from senior forward Brian Woodward.
Smith dropped to 3-3 in the conference and 3-5-1 overall.

Smith dropped to 3-2 in the Piedmont Triad Conference and 3-4-1 overall. Glenn has a game lead on the Golden Eagles for the final PTC playoff berth. The two play again Oct. 20 in Kernersville.

Webb finished the 3.1-mile course in 18 minutes and 47 seconds. Covarrubias ran a 19:13.
Quintin Jackson, Gandhy Torrellas and Reggie Wynn finished fourth, sixth and eighth, respectively, for BLS.
Christina Woodward ran a personal best of 28:34 for the girls.
The Golden Eagles (3-2) will take part in the city-county meet next Monday at Hagan-Stone Park. Their next conference meet is against Glenn next Tuesday at BLS.
Meanwhile, the girls' tennis team lost to Southwest 8-1, but the doubles team of Rebecca Dimondstein and Shaquinta Platt proved victorious. They defeated Sarah Oglesby and Jean Hawthorne 6-3 for BLS's sole win.
Platt lost to Mary Alice Grube 8-2 in No. 1 singles action. With the win, Grube effectively captured the PTC title. Platt finished second in the league.
Smith dropped to 2-8 in the league and 2-10 overall. Southwest is 10-0 overall and 8-0 in the league.
In volleyball action, Smith was swept by the Lady Cowboys. The BLS varsity lost 14-10, 15-10, 15-8.
Smith hosts Parkland tonight at 7 o'clock in soccer action.
The JV football team will play at Dudley Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Western won the meet 23-32. BLS's Gandhy Torrellas was eighth in 19:41. Mike Free and Quintin Jackson were ninth and 10th, respectively. Smith is 1-1 in dual meets.
On the girls' side, Smith's Christina Woodward turned in his best time of the season, 29:48.
Meanwhile, the Smith volleyball team lost in five games to Glenn. Smith dropped to 5-3 in the league and 6-6 overall. The Lady Eagles received a forfeit victory over Page, the top-ranked 4-A team the state. Page decided to take the forfeit to prepare for its match with arch-rival Grimsley Thursday. Page (17-1) won that match in four games.
Southwest Guilford, the second-ranked soccer team in the region, walloped Smith 9-1 Thursday night. Rade Karac scored Smith lone goal. Smith dropped to 2-1 in the PTC and 2-3 overall. The Golden Eagles host Carver Monday night at 7.
Angelo Poole scored on runs of 48 and four yards to lead the Smith JV football team to a 20-0 Piedmont Triad 3-A win over Winston-Salem Parkland Thursday night at Manzi Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (1-0, 3-1) won for the second time this week after beating Grimsley Monday. That game was made up after last Thursday night's game was postponed by Hurricane Floyd.
Smith jumped on the board early, scoring on its first play from scrimmage. Quarterback Deon King found wideout Jeremy Rankin for a 59-yard touchdown pass. The PAT kick was blocked.
The rest of the first half was a defensive struggle, but the Eagles struck quickly in the third quarter when Poole raced 48 yards on BLS's first play of the quarter.
Poole added a late TD after the defense held Parkland on downs.
Tony Morris led the Golden Eagles on defense with a pair of sacks and several key tackle. Poole added an interception and Greg Palmer a critical sack in the fourth quarter when BLS was still leading only 12-0.
Punter Kevin Brinkley was solid all night, once pinning the Mustangs at their 2-yard line.
Friday night the varsity Golden Eagles open PTC play at Parkland's Deaton-Thompson Stadium. Game time is 7:30. Smith won at Parkland 23-20 last year.
Meanwhile, the NCHSAA is asking prep football fans to help with flood relief in Eastern North Carolina by bringing non-perishable food items to next Friday's games. Smith will play at Western Guilford next Friday.

The Smith soccer team continued to show its improvement Wednesday night, tying Southeast Guilford 1-1 at Manzi Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (2-0, 2-2-1) played the Falcons to a scoreless tie in the first half. Southeast got an early second-half goal and held off several solid scoring opportunities for the Eagles.
But then BLS sophomore Mark Smith broke free for a goal with eight minutes left to force the tie. The Eagles had two more scoring chances, but the Falcons' defense made the saves.
Smith goalkeeper Jeremy Webb made three outstanding saves in the last 15 minutes to hold Southeast in check.
Meanwhile, Smith's volleyball teams swept Parkland at BLS gym. The JV (4-1, 5-3) won in two games, while the varsity (4-2, 4-5) needed four to defeat the Lady Mustangs.
The tennis team lost at Dudley 5-3. Shaquinta Platt and Rebecca Dimondstein were the lone singles winners for BLS (2-5, 2-8).
The Smith JV football team (2-1) hosts Parkland tonight at Manzi Stadium. The Mustangs won 21-14 last season. Tonight's kickoff is at 6:30.

Before the lights came on, Smith was already up 5-0 and BLS coach Scott Duff had pulled his starters. The second unit was no less merciful, scoring six more goals.
In all, 11 Golden Eagles scored. The scorers included Brian Woodward, Damir Bejtovic, Colak Mirza, Harold Hollaway, In In, Rade Karac, Lacina Meite, Sang Nay, Ykap Nie, Jean Bosco Nkurnziza and Dajan Herko.

The boys' soccer team scored a late goal to prevent being shut out at Southeast. The Falcons won the contest 2-1 Wednesday night at Southeast. The Golden Eagles (0-2) saw striker Brian Woodward go down with cramps in the second half.
The girls' tennis team lost a home match to Glenn 5-4. Smith is 1-3 in the league and 1-6 overall.
Deon King hit Deon Adams with a 72-yard touchdown pass on the first play from scrimmage as Smith's JV football team built a commanding 28-6 halftime lead in its season opener and held on for a 28-22 victory over Southeast Guilford Thursday night.
The Golden Eagles forced four Falcon turnovers, with free safety James Smith returning a fumble 85 yards for a touchdown. King, Adams and Ryn Jones had interceptions for BLS (1-0).
Sophomore tailback Terrence Oates paced the offense with 150 yards rushing. Fullback Angelo Poole added 94 yards.
Wideout John Mansfield caught a 30-yard TD pass from King.
Smith opens its home schedule next Thursday when its host High Point Central at Manzi Stadium at 6:30 p.m.
Smith's volleyball team continued its improved play, but the Lady Golden Eagles came up just short Thursday at Southeast Guilford.
Southeast won the match in five games. Smith won two of the first three games before the Lady Falcons rallied to win 10-15, 15-7, 5-15, 16-14, 15-11.
The girls' tennis team lost at Central Thursday 9-0. Smith's record dropped to 1-4.
Smith opened its soccer season with a bang Tuesday night as senior striker Brian Woodward scored on a long-range goal that eluded Grimsley goalkeeper Brent Simmons.
But the early lead was short-lived, as the Whirlies (2-1-1) rallied for a 5-1 NCHSAA soccer victory.
Woodward, who set the Smith single-season scoring record last season with 38 goals, pounded a 35-yard shot beyond the outstretched arms of Simmons and high into the net just eight minutes into the match.
That was before Grimsley went on a scoring barrage that left BLS behind 3-1 at halftime.
"I knew in August that we were going to be weak on defense," Smith coach Scott Duff said. "We allowed three easy goals in the first half because we were not where we were supposed to be. And we missed several easy shots ourselves."
Smith goalkeeper Jeremy Webb was under duress most of the night. He managed nine saves, but the Whirlies had five corner kicks. BLS had none.
Scoring for the Whirlies were Daniel East, Charlie Rierson, Ian White, Tom Holland and Graham Pettigrew.
The Eagles (0-1) seemed to run out of gas after controlling the tempo the first 20 minutes of the match.

Northwest Guilford defeated Smith 8-1 in a prep soccer scrimmage Aug. 18 at Manzi Stadium.
The Vikings jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first of four 20-minute quarters. The Golden Eagles did manage a scoreless tie in the second period.

The Smith boys' soccer team will find out where it stands after the first two and one-half weeks of practice Wednesday Aug. 18 when it hosts fifth-ranked Northwest Guilford in a NCHSAA scrimmage match.
The Golden Eagles hope to earn a playoff spot and contend for the Piedmont Triad 3-A crown.
"We have the potential to have that kind of season and the Northwest scrimmage would be a way of showing that potential," BLS coach Scott Duff said before a recent practice.
Smith is led by senior striker Brian Woodward, who was all-region and all-conference last season. Woodward tallied a score-record 38 goals as a junior. Another key returnee is En En.
The scrimmage with Northwest will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Smith soccer complex.
The Golden Eagles open the regular season Aug. 26 at Southeast Guilford.
The Smith volleyball team opened its '99 campaign at Page Aug. 16 and was swept in three games.
The Golden Eagles lost 15-0, 15-2, 15-1.
The match was originally scheduled to be played at BLS Gym, but the floor there is under repair.
Smith has nine days to get ready for its second match against Southeast Guilford Aug. 25 at 5 p.m. The game is scheduled to be played at BLS.
BLS posted an 8-8 record last season.
