Smith's hot volleyball team ran into an even hotter Southwest Guilford team Thursday night.
The result was a three-game sweep of the championship match by the second-ranked Cowgirls. Southwest won the match 15-9, 15-4, 15-10.
The Lady Eagles (11-8) still are alive, though. They play in the first round of the NCHSAA 3-A playoffs next week. Smith drew Southern Alamance (16-3) for its opening-round match. The Patriots will host the Lady Eagles Tuesday. Southwest will host Eden Morehead (13-7). Western Guilford plays at Harnett Central.
Southwest (20-3) jumped to a 12-2 lead in the first game on its homecourt Thursday night before Smith rallied behind senior Jackie Wood, who turned up the pressure on the Cowgirls with her play at the net. The Lady Eagles got within 13-9 before Southwest pulled away.
"When the blocks started happening, it gave us a spark," BLS coach Ecolia Smith said. "I started thinking we had a chance to win at that point."
Smith went ahead early in each of the final two games, but Southwest rallied to win each -- and the match.
The Lady Eagles lost three times to Southwest this season, but got closer with each passing match -- which bodes well for the playoffs.
