![]() Exact statistics for the actual total number of human beings exterminated in various programs during the war are difficult to arrive at, as the Nazis destroyed many records, or in other cases kept none at all. The numbers of dead among European Jewry can be traced to census records and Nazi official tallies presented during the Nuremberg trials. In total 5,796,129 or 60% of the pre-war European Jewish population were killed during the Holocaust. The following table lists the numbers of Jews killed by country, and the percentage of the prewar population they comprised. Austria 50,000 27% Belgium 28,900 44% Bohemia/Moravia 78,150 66.1% Bulgaria 0 0% Denmark 60 0.7% Estonia 2,000 44.4% Finland 7 . 3% France 77,820 22.1% Germany 141,000 25% Greece 67,000 86.6% Hungary 569,000 69% Italy 7,680 17.3% Latvia 7,500 78.1% Lithuania 143,000 85.1% Luxembourg 1,950 55.7% Netherlands 100,000 71.4% Norway 762 44.8% Poland 3,000,000 90.9% Romania 287,000 47.1% Slovakia 71,000 71% Soviet Union 1,100,000 36.4% Yugoslavia 63,300 81.2% ------- Total 5,796,129 60% Over 5,000,000 other 'undesirables' were killed in the Holocaust. Of these, some numbers can be tabulated. Approximately 250,000 gypsies were killed. The T-4 Euthanasia Program, which was primarily directed at German 'degenerates', patients at mental hospitals, terminally ill, etc., was responsible for the death of at least another 100,000 adult mental patients and 5,000 children in mental hospitals. The tally can be easily doubled as an untold number ended up at the concentration camps and met their fate there, with no record whatsoever. |
