Don't Get Dinged for Using Notes
-
Introduction
-
You don't get dinged for using notes if you let everyone see them
-
Many people learn better visually than verbally
-
Use visual aids to enhance your presentation instead of detracting from
it
-
General Information
-
Layout
-
7x7 rule
-
Text 1/2" for 10' away
-
Use diagrams and charts instead of columns of numbers
-
Use of color
-
Use 2 or 3 colors unless a picture
-
Red is a good color to draw attention
-
Be aware of meanings colors have - don't use red to highlight a big profit
-
There needs to be good contrast not just a difference in color
-
Note: some Power Point color combinations are terrible (Freelance Graphics
had their templates laid out by graphic artists. Microsoft didn't
when they copied that feature.)
-
Presenting the visual
-
Don't talk to the visual
-
Allow a few seconds for people to look at the visual before you start talking
-
Before the presentation
-
Rehearse with the visual
-
How does the visual work in the room?
-
Check your equipment
-
Is the projector bulb good?
-
PC to projector connection (can you powerup your lap top then plug it in
if your not the first speaker)
-
Will the flip chart leaning against the wall stand up on its own?
-
Backup is better - Plan to use LCD projector & make overheads for a
backup
-
Handout
-
Hand them out before so audience can make notes on them
-
Don't hand them out during your speech, people will be reading them
-
Leave out sections you don't want people to read ahead
-
Objects
-
gives you something to do with your hands
-
Must be big enough for everyone to see
-
Pull them out in order to provide & talk about to give you an outline
-
Flip Charts
-
Use lines if you need to
-
Flipping two pages at a time is quieter
-
Only you can see notes in light pencil
-
Overhead Transparencies
-
Turn project off when not in use
-
Use color & pictures
-
Notes can be placed on the frame
-
Use pencil as a pointer - Point while facing the audience
-
Can reveal part of an overhead by pulling a paper back or stacking overheads
-
Place paper under transparency not on it
-
Older projectors got hot
-
Helps to hold the paper in place
-
You can read ahead
-
LCD Projectors
-
Can update your presentation at the last minute (refer to an idea made
by an other speaker earlier in the day)
-
Can reveal part of a page with animation
-
Drawback - if you have to flip back to answer a question, each animated
addition is a page you have to flip though
-
You can use a laser pointer
-
If you have to talk while pointing to a diagram, use a mike because you
will have a hard time facing the audience.
-
Conclusion
-
Use visual aids to enhance your presentation instead of detracting from
it
