Past tense เป็น tense ที่ใช้บอกเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้นและจบลงแล้วในอดีต   past tenses แบ่งเป็นประเภทย่อยๆ ได้เหมือนกับ present tenses คือ past simple tense, past continuous tense, past perfect tense และ past perfect continuous tense

        การใช้กริยาในรูป past tense นี้ค่อนข้างง่ายเพราะประธานทุกตัวจะใช้ได้กับกริยาช่อง 2 เหมือนกันหมด กริยาช่อง 2 นี้แบ่งออกได้เป็น 2 ประเภทคือ regular verbs และ irregular verbs

Regular Verbs

1. regular verbs ตามปกติ เราเปลี่ยนกริยาช่อง 1 ให้เป็นกริยาช่อง 2 โดยการเติม -ed เข้าท้ายคำ เช่น

• work > worked
• live > lived
• stay > stayed

2. กริยาบางตัวสะกดด้วยสระหนึ่งตัวและตัวสะกดตัวเดียว ก่อนเติม -ed ต้องเพิ่มตัวสะกดหนึ่งตัว เช่น

•     stop > stopped
•     beg > begged

3. กริยาที่ลงท้ายด้วย -y ก่อนเติม -ed เปลี่ยน -y เป็น -i ก่อนแล้วค่อยเติม เช่น

•     cry > cried
•     carry > carried
•     try > tried

4.  ยกเว้นถ้าหน้า -y เป็นสระ สามารถเติม  -ed ท้ายคำได้ทันที เช่น

•     play > played
•    delay > delayed

5. Irregular verbs: there is no rule. Here are some examples:

• be > was
• sing > sang
• go > went
• read > read

Regular Verbs

    มีกริยาอยู่กลุ่มหนึ่ง ซึ่งเมื่อเปลี่ยนเป็น past tense จะไม่ได้ลงท้ายด้วย -ed แต่อาจจะอยู่ในรูปเดิม เช่น put > put,     shut > shut หรืออาจจะเปลี่ยนรูปไปเลย เช่น run > ran, come > came

    กลุ่มกริยาที่เป็นแบบ irregular verbs ซึ่งกริยาช่อง 2 และ 3 ไม่ได้เติม  ed ตามแบบธรรมดา ดูได้จาก irregular verbs

Negative sentences (-)

The Main Verb is the infinitive without 'to':

• to like > like

Examples:

• did not work
• did not sing
• did not go

Question Sentences (?)

Examples:

• Did you work?
• Did she sing?
• Did Anthony go?

Exception To be

When the Main Verb is 'to be', we do not use an auxiliary, even for negative and question sentences. Look at these examples:

• He was not in Brazil. (not He did not be in Brazil.)
• You weren't here.
• Was he first? (not Did he be first?)
• Were you early?

Look at these examples with:

• the regular verb to work (> worked)
• the irregular verb to go (> went)

Look at these examples with:

• the verb to be (which is always irregular!)

1. เราใช้ past simple tense กับเหตุการณ์ หรือ การกระทำที่เกิดขึ้น และจบสิ้นลงแล้วในอดีต เช่น

• I lived in that house when I was young.
• Jan woke up late this morning.
• Sam drove to London on Monday.
• Mary did not go to work yesterday.

2.  past simple tense สามารถใช้บอกลักษณะนิสัยในอดีต ในกรณีนี้เราอาจใช้ "used to" ซึ่งแปลว่า เคยทำเป็นประจำในอดีตได้ เช่น

• Pete smoked 10 cigarettes a day when he was younger.
• Pete used to smoke 10 cigarettes a day when he was younger.

    ในการพุดเหตุการณ์ในอดีต เราอาจใช้คำบอกเวลาในอดีตได้ เช่น  yesterday, last summer, two years ago, this morning
