On the Fragrance of Love

A wonderful perfume did she bring,
To anoint the Lord before His death;
The betrayer detested such a penance,
And ended up dying in despair.

Let us follow the example of love,
Which brings one down before the Lord;
Instead of the example of avarice,
Which will lead one to hope only in money and power.

For the perfume was good because of the love
Which she had so freely given to her Lord;
The despair of the betrayer took root in his wealth,
But he died a pauper, fleeing from the rich charity of Christ.

She had come, kissing His feet in humility,
Judas had come, kissing Christ's lips with pride;
She had abandoned her lust for the Lord,
While Judas died holding onto his lust for power.

Follow the humble example of St. Mary,
Who loved the Lord and was loved by Him,
Instead of the example of Judas whose pride
Took from him his own life.
