Assignment 7: Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Citing Academic Research without Plagiarizing.

Instructions for Readings:

  1. Find Wilson Library on the West Bank and go to the Reserve Periodicals Desk in the Periodicals Room on the basement level of the library. The Reserve Periodicals Desk is open M-Th 8 am to 9 pm; Friday 8 am to 5 pm; Sat. 12 noon to 5 pm; and Sunday 1 pm to 8 pm. Students may make their own copy of a copyrighted chapter for educational purposes without infringing the author’s copyright and without paying copyright fees (thus making their self-copying cheaper).
  2. Check out and photocopy Ronald Siegel’s Chapter 8 from the book "Fire in the Brain" entitled "Sheila and the Swastikas" which is on 2 hour reserve. After you give them your I.D. you have 2 hours to read or photocopy the article which will be in a manila envelope with a photocopy in it. There are photocopiers on the floor and also a copy center which is open M-Th 9 am to 6 pm; Fri. 9 am to 5 pm and Sat. and Sun. 4pm to 8 pm.
  3. Check out and photocopy Michael Harner’s article "The Role of Hallucinogenic Plants in European Witchcraft."
  4. If you want to get the photocopying for the next assignment done ahead of time (to save yourself a trip), check out and photocopy Ronald Seigel’s 1977 article from Scientific American vol. 237, pp.132-40, entitled "Hallucinations" and also J. D. Lewis-Williams article from Current Anthropology vol. 29 no, 2 April 1988 entitled "The Signs of All Times: Entoptic Phenomena in Upper Paleolithic Art."

Educational Goals:

Students will learn where the main library building is located and become familiar with the reserve periodicals system. Students will then learn how to summarize and paraphrase academic research (without plagiarizing) which is a vitally important writing skill.

 

Assignment 7: Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Citing Academic Research without Plagiarizing.

Part One:

Read Ronald Siegel’s chapter 8 from his book "Fire in the Brain." Chapter 8 is entitled "Sheila and the Swastikas."

In no more than one and one half pages and using minimal or no direct quotations (and without plagiarizing) summarize the following topic in the following way.

Write an explanation with clearly defined terms for a Middle School (Junior High School) audience i.e. that a Middle School or Junior High School student could understand, indicating how sleep deprivation and caffeine can cause a person to hallucinate and see culturally interpreted entoptic phenomena while apparently "awake." Use Dr. Siegel’s case study called "Sheila and the Swastikas" to define and illustrate with a concrete example what a "Stage 1" hallucination is and the difficulty of diagnosing or detecting one. Use the APA citation format.

Part Two:

Read Michael Harner’s article "The Role of Hallucinogenic Plants in European Witchcraft."

In no more than one and one half pages and using minimal or no direct quotations (and without plagiarizing) summarize the following topic in the following way.

Write an explanation with clearly defined terms for a college-aged audience indicating how intentional or accidental ingestion of hallucinogenic plants (many of which are commonly found weeds) can cause a stage 3 hallucination involving "flying" and "lycanthropy." Use Michael Harner’s historical research on the connection between European witchcraft (and lycanthropy) and hallucinogenic plants to define and illustrate this using a concrete example. Use the APA citation format.

Assigned: Tuesday October 3rd. (3 pages).

Course Points: 40 points

Due: First Draft Due Tuesday October 10th with 4 copies for the Editing Practice/Peer Review Workshop on that day.

Final Draft Due Thursday October 13th. Final Drafts should be handed in in the two pocket folder along with the first draft and editors comments.
