Recommended Reading

I have arranged these books in order of my recommendation. There are many, many more I recommend reading, so keep checking back while I add to the list! I have divided them into:
| Wiccan/Witchcraft books | History of Paganism and The Craft | Other Reference Sources |
| Native American Books |

Wiccan Books

Silver RavenWolf

I feel that Silver RavenWolf is one of the "hottest" authors on the market today for Introductory and Intermediate Wicca and Witchcraft books. I have read the following three, and recommend all of them.

To Ride a Silver Broomstick by Silver RavenWolf. As far as I'm concerned, this is the BEST introduction guide to Wicca. Silver writes with a sense of humor, with a wonderful format for creating spells.

To Stir A Magick Cauldron by Silver RavenWolf. This takes over where Silver's Broomstick left off, and empasizes the disclipline of the Craft.

Cauldron Cover

Hexcraft by Silver RavenWolf. Silver researches her roots in Pennsylvania Dutch Country Magick or "Pow-Wow" Magick. Although she admits she could not find many primary sources for the reasearch, it is still an excellent book.

Scott Cunningham

Scott was one of the most prolific writers on craft books, with over 30 books to his credit. All are a good read, below is a good first book.

Wicca - The Guide for the Solitary Practioner. This is an EXCELLENT beginner's book in the craft with a less discliplined approach to practicing that Silver RavenWolf.

Living Wicca - A Further Guide to the Solitary Practioner. This book is excellent if you wish to create your own tradition, giving you guidance in everything from dieties to initiation rites. Again, an excellent book.

tBuckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft by Raymond Buckland. Provides a good overview of different systems of Witchcraft, a sample ritual for each Sabbat, how to make tools, ritual robes, etc.

History of Paganism and The Craft

Dancing Shadows by AOUMIEL an EXCELLENT book telling the roots of paganism that she has shown dates back to 28,000 B.C.E.  It is absolutely facinating to read what early civilizations knew to be true - that the Goddess and God were equal and part of the same ALL!   a MUST read!

Drawing Down the Moon

Drawing Down the Moon by Margot Adler. Margot interviewed hundreds of witches in covens all over American to create a composite of what is a witch. I highly recommend it!

Spiral Dance by Starhawk. She documents the growth, supression and re-birth of modern-day Witchcraft.

Chaplain's Guide to Wicca While cruizing the web, I found this and felt it was VERY informative on Wicca and the Army's procedures for recognizing our religion. I have reproduced it on my site for your use.

Native American Books

Although I cannot prove that I am Native American, I feel a deep kinship with the beliefs of the Lakota people. These five books have had a great influence on me, and helped shape the practice of my Wicca.

Rolling Thunder by Doug Boyd This is the story of a man, Doug Boyd, who disbelives in magick. But through his life with Rolling Thunder, comes to believe in this powerful medicine man. I was swept away by how he told of his denial, disbelief, wonder, acceptance, then unshakeable belief in Rolling Thunder's powers. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Lame Deer Seeker of Visions by John (Fire) Lame Deer and Richard Erdoes. This is the story of a Pejuta Wicasa, a Medicina Man of the Lakotas. It is his life story of growing up a hell-raiser, and finaly comming into his destiny as a spiritual leader to his people.

Gift of Power - The Life and Teachings of a Lakota Medicine Man by Archie Fire Lame Deer and Richard Erdoes. John, on his death bed, passed on his "gift of power" to his son. This is Archie's story of the "reluctant" medicine man. This is his story of pain and trial and how he finally becomes his destiny.

Mitakuye Oyasin "We are all related" by Dr. A.C. Ross (Ehanamani) I purchased this book from Dr. Ross at the October 97 Pow Wow in Honolulu.   Dr. Ross, with his teachings in Jung psychology and brain hemispheric research shows how recent findings in these fields were known by the Lakotas since the beginning.  How he explains his studies Lakota beliefs, along with beliefs from 25 other tribes, and tries to rationalize them out with scientific thinking is facinating.  Any of you who are having trouble believing that magick works, pick up this book!

Ehanamani "Walks Among" The Winter Count of a Santee Dakota Educator, Historian, and Spiritual Guide by Dr. A.C. Ross.  This is Dr. Ross's Autobiography, and is also an excellent book on the life of a person in search of their roots.
