Section I.1: What is Baubo?
Baubo is an ancient Greek goddess, personified by the vulva. As such, she is complementary to the Greek god Priapus, the personification of the erect phallus, and Baubo is utilized here to indicate an archetype that is the feminine manifestation of the All-Creator/All-Destroyer -- as Priapus is the masculine archetype. Unfortunately, this phalli-centric culture has only recognized the Priapic archetype, so much so that the English language has no feminine equivalent to "Priapic". Previous times, or Æons (see Section II.6 for Æonic Progressions), being more vulva-centric probably recognized the Baubolic Archetype (or a variant thereof). For this Æon we must recognize this forgotten Baubolic archetype and exalt it equally with that of the Priapic archetype as the mutually venerated source of life. We intend to work with this archetype. The first step is to recognize this fourth archetype, which Jung referred to as the Infertile Mother. Jung created it as opposite the Fertile Mother whose focus is on childbearing, nurturing and the Mysteries of Life and Death relative to this perspective. The Infertile Mother is not known for having children (although she may, despite the title Jung gave to the archetype), rather they are known for having sex for pleasure and as a magickal act. The Fertile Mother may be unable to defend herself or her children (either through lack of training -- she is devoting all her time to care and nurture -- or because she is pregnant, etc) and requires protection, typically in the guise of a domestic partner (typically Husband archetype or a Baubolic archetype). The Baubolic archetype normally does not need defending and is likely to turn on you for your presumption -- if you have not proven yourself worthy of Her respect. She also governs the Mysteries of Life and Death, but from a different perspective than that of the Fertile Mother. War, Defense, Magick, Music, and the like can be within her domain. On one level, the Baubolic Archetype is a female who takes on certain attributes of the Masculine Warrior/Father without diminishing her femininity or becoming androgynous. |
