Section II.7:  "Reality"

As a spider spins and withdraws its web, as herbs grow on the earth, as hair grows on the head and body of a person, so also from the Imperishable arises this universe.
-- Atharva Veda, Mundaka Upanishads 1.1.7. bo The Principal Upanishads, 673

There are several types of Reality.  First, there is Objective Reality which may or may not exist, but which we will assume exists.  The problem with Objective Reality is that the moment we apprehend it, it becomes Subjective Reality.  Subjective Reality is divided into several more types, Consensual Reality - that which is shared by the whole, and Personal Reality - that which is believed by the individual.  Overlapping these are also Mundane, Magickal and Mystical Reality.  Admittedly these divisions are arbitrary, and other valid divisions could be made, but for this brief explanation these shall suffice.

Objective reality is the template from which all other realities are manifest.  The common perception of this reality is our Consensual reality.  Trees are plants, water is wet and people are sentient beings.  Pendent to, contributing to and derived from this is our Personal reality.  This is our own personal slant on things, our own personal set of biases, prejudices and assumptions.  Unfortunately, this is all to often mistaken for the Consensual or even Objective Reality.

Now Subjective reality has three phases within which we work, both on the Consensual and Personal level.  Mundane reality is your normal consciousness, the one which goes to work, eats, eliminates waste and goes to bars to get laid.  Much of our waking life is spent in this mode.  Most people in Western Society are confined to this mode of reality or consciousness.  This mode of consciousness is sometimes referred to as sleepwalking.  Mystical reality is experienced through Religious/Shamanistic practices, drugs and luck.  It is the alternate consciousness most likely to be experienced by your average person and is characterized by ecstasy and a knowledge of something beyond oneself1.  This mode of Reality is seldom controlled.  Magickal reality is similar to Mystical reality except that it is controlled.  One enters Magickal reality to elicit a specific response.
