The Kilpatrick Family
Created on Aug. 25, 2001
My interest in the Kilpatrick family stems primarily from one datum, which
is critical to my family history:
In 1753 James Killpatrick was admininstrator of the estate of William
Leech in Anson Co. NC (which at that time included York Co. SC). This is
the earliest reference I've found to my Leech family in SC. Incidentally
it was also the year of the birth of Katherine Kilpatrick Kerr, who died
in 1821 in York Co.
The Kilpatricks appear to belong to the large clan of Scotch Irish who
showed up along the PA-MD border in the early 18th Century and moved downward
successively occupying land in VA, NC, and SC. This file contains data reflecting
their presence at various times at various places, particularly as they resemble
similar data re the Leech and Dickey families.
In 1727 John Kilpatrick was an elder at Octoraro Presbyterian
Church near the boundary line between the two colonies (cf p 217 of Robt
W. Ramsey, Carolina Cradle). Other elders at Octoraro were
James Alexander
and Patrick Campbell.
30 years later a man named Leech was one of the parishoners of the church,
now named Middle Octoraro, and connected through marriage to the pastor,
Rev. John Cuthbertson. A man named Walter Moore had two daughters: Elizabeth
married Mr. Leech and Sarah married Rev. Cuthbertson.
In 1739 Capt. Hollingsworth's Cecil Co. Maryland militia List included
John Kilpatrick. His name is next to that of Edward Armstrong. (Later John
Armstrong and James Kilpatrick were neighbors in York County). David Leech
was also in the Maryland militia that year.
In 1758 John Kilpatrick was listed in the Augusta Co. VA militia. (Cf Crozier's
Va Colonial Militia 1905.
On November 16, 1763 300 acres of John Kilpatrick and 400 acres of Thos.
Kilpatrick were added to titheables in Augusta County (Chalkley Vol 1, p.110
(page 332 of the Order Book)
In 1778 John Killpatrick and John Barr were in Capt. Cowan's District
of Rowan Co. Nearby was John Dickey (an orphan), James and George Kerr,
John, William and Samuel Knox, Isaac Ervin, and many other familiar members
of the Scotch Irish clan. According to Robert Ramsey Kilpatrick was in the
area by 1762 (see Carolina Cradle map p. 108) a few miles from Lord Granville's
Line, which divided Rowan and Mecklenburg Counties. As a guess this might
be in the Thyatira congregation.

(Kerr, Sr.) was born in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on February 23,
1755. By 1769, Andrew was living in York District, South Carolina. Andrew
fought in Rev. and helped to build a fort near Williams Mill on Turkey Creek,
Chester County, SC granted a pension in 1833. Andrew married Katharine
Kilpatrick in 1780 in York District, South Carolina, and the couple had 11
children: (Katherine was the daughter of William and Margaret Dickey Kilpatrick.
Margaret Dickey was the daughter of William Dickey, Jr. and his wife Margaret
Wilson. William Dickey, Jr. is said to have died in 1789 in York Co. SC.)
Henry McNabb, William, John, Isabella, Margaret, Mary Price, Andrew Jr.,
James Kilpatrick, Robert, Zenas Dodridge and Joseph Edmon. Andrew owned land
in York Andrew Kerr, Sr. died June 18, 1842 and is buried in Bethel Presbyterian
Cemetery near Clover, York County, South Carolina. Katharine Kilpatrick
Kerr died March 4, 1821 and is also buried in Bethel Presbyterian Cemetery.
(Akins and Feemsters are also buried there. ***Joseph and Sarah McCarter
Leech also buried at Bethel in 1839.!! One of the earliest Dickey
immigrants to this country was William Dickey, Sr. (1683-1748) He was born
in Muckamore, County Antrim, Ireland and died in Sadsbury TWP, Chester County,
Pennsylvania William, Sr. had 3 sons, William, Jr., James and John; they
will be briefly described here. His son William Dickey, Jr. was
born in Ireland in 1712 and married Margaret Wilson. One of their children,
Margaret Dickey, married William Kilpatrick, born 1734. Their daughter,
Catherine Kilpatrick, was born in 1753 in Anson Co. NC (very likely in the
area that later became York Co. SC). Catherine died in York Co. in 1821.
Is this the Catherine Kilpatrick who married Andrew Kerr and had 11 children.
They are both buried in Bethel Cemetery in York Co. together with members
of the Leech family!! This reflects the association of the Leech family
with Dickeys and Kilpatricks. ---------------------------------------------

was born July 15, 1801 in York District, South Carolina. He married Mary
E. Suggs in 1836 in York District. According to the 1850 Federal Census,
Zenas at the time owned real estate worth $5000.00. His occupation was listed
as “farmer.” Zenas and Mary had at least 10 children: James Isaac, Laban Suggs,
Andrew, William G., Margaret J., Mary, John Daniel, Cornelius Johnson B.,
Martha and Mortimer. The family lived in York County until sometime before
1860, at which time they are listed in the census as living in Paris, Lafayette
County, Mississippi. According to 1860 census information, Zenas owned $6000.00
of real estate and had a personal estate of $6000.00. Residing with Zenas
and his family was his brother Joseph E. Kerr, with an estate of equal value
to that of Zenas. His exact date of death is unknown at this point, but has
been indicated to be before 1870 in Mississippi, possibly in Lafayette County.

Franklin census 124; near David Leech and Mynos B. Feamster Reviewing all
this material I came up with the following hypothesis: In 1753 James Kilpatrick
and William Leech were together in Turkey Cr. area in what was then Anson
Co. NC, but which later became York Co. SC. James had patents on ca 2000
acres of land on Turkey and Fishing Creeks. After the war David Leech had
property in both these places, something over 1000 acres. James Kilpatrick
is no longer on the scene. (In 1800 James and William Kilpatrick are in Pendleton
Co. SC.) Suppose James Kilpatrick and William Leech were brothers-in-law.
William died in 1753. After the war David Leech owns property patented
by James Kilpatrick. This is most important to me because that 1753
datum is the earliest record of have of the Leech's in that area. It's thus
my best bet for tracing their migration from the north. Perhaps this
William Leech is the one who married Mary Ross in 1745 in Philadelphia: Marriage

The Dickey Family
William Dickey, Sr. was born in 1683 in Muckamore, County Antrim, Ireland
and died in 1748 in Sadsbury, Chester County, Pennsylvania
William Dickey, Jr. was born ca 1712 in Ireland, and died in 1789 in York
Co. SC. About 1734 he married Margaret Wilson (born 1717). They had a daughter
named Margaret who married William Kilpatrick (born 1734). The daughter
of William and Margaret was Katherine Kilpatrick, who became the wife of
Andrew Kerr.
Katherine died in 1821 and Andrew in 1842. Both are buried at Bethel
Presbyerian Cemetery in Clover in western York Co, where rest also the remains
of several members of the Leech family. Some other inhabitants of that cemetery
are:
Alexander Ross (1775-1823).
Henry Craig (1729-1807)
David Johnston (1798-1825)
Joseph Feemster (1778-1839)
Sarah Feemster (1783-1839)
The Kerr Family
In 1768 Andrew Kilpatrick was granted 400 acres
on the south fork of the Pacolet, from John Clark of Mecklenburg.
In 1778 James and Thomas Kilpatrick were petit jurors at the New Acquisition,
as was also David Leech. The New Acquisition was briefly a geographical
unit that later became York Co.
The following is taken from a fellow researcher named Cyndi
working on Kilpatrick, Kerr and Dickey:
The Kerrs were said to have come to Pennsylvania "in extraordinary numbers"
in the years 1720-50. (Cf. Carolina Cradle p. 68) Among them were four brothers:
John Kerr, Sr.
Joseph (born 1706)
Andrew (born 1708) and
Robert (born 1710).
John received a grant of 100,000 acres in NC. He had four sons: John
Jr., Andrew, Robert and William. John's son, Andrew was born in Mecklenburg
Co. in 1755 and was living in York District, SC by 1769. A patriot, Andrew
was involved in the construction of fortifications on Turkey Creek in Chester
Co. below the York Co. line. He granted a Revolutionary soldier's pension
in 1833.
In 1780 Andrew married Katharine Kilpatrick in York District, South Carolina,
and the couple had 11 children: (Katherine was the daughter of William and
Margaret Dickey Kilpatrick. Margaret Dickey was the daughter of William
Dickey, Jr. and his wife Margaret Wilson. William Dickey, Jr. is said to
have died in 1789 in York Co. SC.) Henry McNabb, William, John, Isabella,
Margaret, Mary Price, Andrew Jr., James Kilpatrick, Robert, Zenas Dodridge
and Joseph Edmon. Andrew owned land in York
