The five-pointed star, or pentagram, is sacred to the Witch because of its ancient symbolism. Each of the five points represents one of the Elements -- Air, Earth, Fire, Water, and Spirit. Spirit is usually placed on top, signifying Spirit over Matter. However, don't jump to conclusions about a Witch being a satanist if the pentagram is worn upside down, because in this position the pentagram represents the Horned God or shows a level of initiation within some covens. The circle surrounding the pentagram represents Unity and the continual cycle of Life, Death, and Rebirth.
When referring to the Elements, a Witch is not referring to the atomic
elements found on the Periodic Table in chemistry classrooms. The
Elements can be described as different states of Energy or Consciousness
and each has specific qualities (directions are given for the Northern
Hemisphere):
Air (East):
Intellect, Imagination, Knowledge
Earth (North): The Body, Foundation, Strength
Fire (South): Will, Vitality, Passion
Water (West):
Emotion, Intuition, Compassion
