The Spider And Her Web

Once there was a very small spider who had very great ambitions.  She wanted to weave a web that stretched from Mother Earth to Father Sky, from Brother Sun to Sister Moon.  (And also at this time, there were no stars visible in the heavens) .So, she started weaving a gossamer web, of delicate, beautiful tough spider silk.  Her web, being not only a thing of beauty in her eyes, was also her lively hood and her lifeline.  On and on she weaved, catching the things she needed to survive, and many other things besides.

One day, Coyote was running from hunters, when he became entangled by the Spider's web.  He begged and pleaded with her to free him quickly, because he was afraid of being caught, yet when he was freed, he laughed at Spider because her beautiful web had become tattered odds and ends floating on the wind. Spider paid him no mind, for she was imminently patient, knowing that her web could be spun anew or repaired, as needed.

Another day, Hawk flew above her web and landed in a tree near Spider.  He had noticed how far her web reached, and was curious about her motives. Spider told Hawk of her hopes and dreams, and continued weaving her new patterns into the web.

One day, the Wind whispered to Spider as it jangled and tinkled in her web--"What is this web you are making little sister....it flies on my breezes and it stretches across one end of Mother Earth to the other...It sparkles with the dew, and it resonates with my breezes...it is wondrous."  Spider smiled shyly, and said to the Wind, "I weave my web because I like to weave, and to dance...Thank you for your compliment."  The Wind blew away and told the Great Spirit of the Spider and her wondrous web.

The Great Spirit traveled to see Spider, and saw that her web--magical, mysterious--was a thing of great beauty--but he also saw that she was running out of room to weave in.  "Little Sister," said the Great Spirit, "Let me help you find more room so that you may continue weaving your wonderful pattern for all to see."  The Spider agreed, and the Great Spirit set her web into the sky....This web we still see and marvel at today, with its dew drops forever set in the heavens—it became the stars, dancing slowly in their patterns, weaving ages old tapestries and stories that we have passed down through our families.
