The CALDERSTONES
The Remains of a Megalithic Burial Chamber
LIVERPOOL, ENGLAND.
The Calderstones were once part of a megalithic chambered tomb, dating
from about 2500 BCE. Sadly the original tomb was destroyed in the first
half of the 18th Century, but six large stones remain intact and can be
seen arranged in a circle in the Harthill Greenhouse in Calderstone Park.
Another stands outside, like a silent sentinal to our ancient past. In
a nearby street is another connected feature, the so called `Robin Hood`
stone (see inset) named because the long vertical grooves were thought
to have been made by sharpening arrows during the medieval period. The
Calderstones burial chamber would have been similar in design to the ones
found on Anglesey (Bryn Celli Ddu and Barclodiad y Gawres) and those found
in the Boyne Valley in Ireland. Indeed, the Calderstones are decorated
with many carvings that can be seen at all these burial chambers, cup marks,
cup and ring, spirals, sun and wheel motifs.
