Athens is a community of philosophers, teachers, and other thinkers, with a wide range of spiritual and ethical beliefs. We are an open forum, united by a tolerant attitude and the right to free speech.

Aegean Forum Reviews

*Public Forums

*Log in to Geocities Forums here, then visit your favorite neighborhood discussion groups and meet your virtual neighbors. Expand a section by clicking on the plus sign- in Athens there are special sections for Education, Literature, Poetry, and Religion, and a general message board called "Other Discussions." The Help forum contains thousands of articles, and members are encouraged to respond to questions from other homesteaders.

*Family Education Network forums are equipped with user-friendly Web Crossing software, and with some new online partners, traffic is definitely up. But we haven't forgotten a time not so long ago when Geocities had no forums, and Athens homesteaders paddled out to the FEN boards and hoisted a flag over an out of the way corner there. "The Athens Conference," renamed After Hours, is integrated into the FEN discussion community now but if you look closely you'll see that like many modern communities of the Mediterranean, it was founded by travellers from Athens.

After Hours Guidelines

*NPR Forums (National Public Radio) - If you talk back to the All Things Considered correspondents while sitting in rush hour traffic, you'll welcome this opportunity to talk back and be heard! With real audio listen to some of the stories as broadcast. Intelligent and lively, sometimes heated discussion about issues and interests of our times.

*Cafe Utne is the Conversation section of urbane Utne Reader Online, whose mission is providing people with new and innovative solutions for living more balanced, fulfilling lives, and bringing about positive change in the world.. Some discussions are follow-ups to articles published in the Utne Reader. The online version is Utne Lens.

*Suite 101 and rival The Mining Company offer original articles, links to best sites on the web, and discussions hosted by "Contributing Editors" and "Guides." Jump right into an Arts and Humanities discussion on Suite 101, where the elegantly simple site design includes a registration form on every discussion page. The Mining Company has a less simple interface but some discussions are more developed. Our favorite section is the Ancient History page.

*If you like to play with your virtual food or to swap inside information with travellers, you'll love Conde Nast's Epicurious. Search the Epicurious Food section with the "Kitchen Seek," then navigate Epicurious Travel with "Where in the World."

*iVillage.com: The Women's Network, together with partners Family Health and popular parenting sites Parent Soup and ParentsPlace, maintain an extensive and easily navigated series of forums covering many areas of practical interest. To navigate into the various boards, click on the "board channels." Parent Soup and Parents Place come up together under "Parenting." Health discussions are extensive.

*ZDNet Forums - "What are we discussing here? Just about everything! Every ZDNet magazine and channel has forums." Sort by brand or by category. Most discussions are computing or internet related.

*TalkCity installed the excellent Web Crossing forum software, then forgot to promote and maintain their message boards - it's actually difficult to find a link to them anywhere on the site. Want to have a private discussion area for your friends? Just pick out a likely spot on the TalkCity boards and discuss away. No one will ever notice.

Hosting a Forum

*Volunteer

The public forums above, and many others, are always looking for volunteers to host message boards. A few services offer modest compensation, and all offer appreciation and the opportunity to become known among people who share your interests. If you enjoy hosting and encouraging good conversation, there probably is a niche for you!

*Add a Forum to your Home Page

*First, read this: "Three steps to Build Your Own Forum"

*Next, Choose a forum provider,
register, and customize your personal forum. Take note: a free forum is never really "personal," because while you create and maintain it, your provider will list it in a public directory. Your forum may bring unexpected visitors to your site.

Here are some popular free forums that you can add to your page. Each has advantages and disadvantages - visit some examples, and try reading and posting at different hours of the day to test speed and reliability:

*Assembly

Attractive interface. Message limit 100, apparently no time limit.

*Bravenet

Customizable appearance, message limit 100. Bravenet offers other homepage enhancements including form mail and a search feature.

*Delphi

Offers a private message area within the forum, 2000 message limit, and a chatroom. Some features require java. Your visitors must register with Delphi.

*Inside The Web

Simple yet customizable. Choose moderated or unmoderated. Permits display of all messages at once. Main disadvantage is that messages are automatically deleted after a short time - one month maximum.

*WebApps

Server seems to be down - this service may no longer be available. Try this URL: http://server.com/WebApps/

*WebForum -WebCity Canada

Note: not all WebForum boards are the free ones maintained by WebCity Canada, since the software is available to be installed on any server.

Here's a good example of WebForum boards:

Philosophy for Everyone

*Low-Tech

An ordinary guestbook can work well as a simple forum! The chief drawback is inability of most guestbooks to recognize paragraphs - but you can explain that in your introduction.

*Finally, Link your forum to your home page

Don't forget to promote your forum, to seed it with good questions and comments, and to check it often. Good luck!

*Personal Forums in Athens

Here are a few personal Forums that are hosted and maintained by Athens homesteaders. Some are busy, while others appear to be undiscovered. Stop by, and don't forget to leave a message!

Note: Each of the following links leads to an Athens home page. Look on that page for a link to the forum.

*The Jane Austen Bulletin Board
*Mystic Maidens
*Catty's Chapel Discussion Forum
*Denny's World: Law Enforcement
*Iconoclast's Freethought Forum
*The Meeting Place for Teachers
*The Absolute Goodness of God

*Reality and Near Death Studies
*WhiteFantom's Haunt: Epitaph
*Healing Voices, Spirit Songs
*Minerva's Catholic Message Board
*House of Public Prayer
*Rock Art Net
*Rationalism, Thought, and Life As We Approach 2000

*All of the Benefits - None of the Work

Find a personal forum whose owner welcomes visitors, that is well attended and maintained, with a topic you care about and "regulars" you like - and add a link to it from your site! Your site's visitors will appreciate finding a good discussion.
