No Progress

Fighting continues in West Bank and the Gaza strip. On Monday night Palestinians opened fire on Gilo. No one was killed in West Bank and the Gaza strip for the first time in three weeks. Prime Minister Ehud Barak is trying to prevent his government from collapsing. He made an appeal to his opposition, but they want to end his government and force elections. Barak has proposed a "long-term interim agreement" with Palestine instead of a peace treaty. Palestinians did not accept his proposal; they want to reach a final agreement covering all issues.

Election

Al Gore re-opened Florida recounts that could change the state's results. This move is part of his defense of his case in court. Gore wants the people to "have their say." "When votes are cast we count them," he says. While Bush is preparing to move into the presidency, Gore is still protesting results making him the first candidate in history to contest an election in the courts. His lawyers have asked for a quick hearing, but it may not happen before the end of the week.

Coach Gets Fired

Paul Westphal, SuperSonics coach, was fired yesterday mid-season. Discord and losses have surrounded the past 15 games. The team was expected to be strong this year due to the addition of Patrick Ewing. However, the team's record for the season is 6-9. The dismissal follows an on-court shouting match between Westphal and guard Gary Payton during a game in Dallas. Westpahl was in the final year of his contract and has become the first NBA coach fired this year.
