CLARY SAGE ~ (Salvia Sclarea)
(odour intensity 5)
The oil from this plant is taken from the flowering tops and leaves of plants grown mainly
in France and Russia. The odour is sweet, herbaceous, nutty and floral, a little like
Lavender and it blends well with most other oils; it's toxicity rating is D which renders
it quite mild.
Its main properties are euphoric and anti-depressant. It has a tonic effect on the nervous
system, assists with depression, i.e. post-natal or following illness - good also for
period pains (with Chamomile) and encourages labour, helping mother relax. It strengthens
kidneys, stomach and helps to reduce high blood pressure. It is also thought to assist
with impotence and frigidity.
Personally I have used it to a great extent to relieve high blood pressure together with
Lavender, Marjoram and Ylang Ylang. Not the whole four at the same time, but usually Clary
Sage, Marjoram and Lavender, and occasionally used Ylang Ylang. Believe me it has really
worked, together with sound advice on a more relaxed way of life; of correct breathing and
learning to control tension.
I had a lovely client who wanted her husband to come and see me, as she felt he would
benefit from a relaxing Aromatherapy massage. Well he was a two feet on the ground
sort-of-a-guy who thought that complimentary medicine was a load of rubbish, and what need
did he have of any of it. Eventually he gave in and booked an appointment, or I should say
his wife booked an appointment!! I took one look at him and thought "high blood pressure" so
before I started I took his blood pressure and it was very high.
I proceeded to test the appropriate oils and made a mixture of Clary Sage, Lavender and
Marjoram and gave him a jolly good massage. He was extremely surly and really didn't want
to talk to me so it wasn't the best atmosphere to work in, but I did my best to make him
feel comfortable. Whilst he was getting dressed I rushed downstairs and had a word with
his wife and said would she get him to a Doctors because I felt he needed to get some
medical help as he obviously had no faith in me!
This duly happened within a day or two and the Doctor said there was nothing wrong with
his blood pressure; well I knew why, because the oils had taken effect but he thought I
was a complete joke.
Some months later he needed a medical to obtain a second mortgage on his house, but when
he went to the Doctors, lo-and-behold his blood pressure was seriously high and the Doctor
said come back in a week's time and I will check it out again for your loan, but there is
no way I can recommend this loan with blood pressure this high.
He was on the telephone to me so fast it was amazing and I treated him the day before his
second blood pressure test, using the above mentioned oils, teaching him relaxing and
breathing techniques. His attitude towards me was totally different, and we had a very
enjoyable session with a great deal of mutual trust.
I awaited the outcome of the second medical with baited breath and my friend telephoned me
straight away with the good news that his blood pressure had registered completely normal
and believe me it had been very high. Well I was very happy and I had a good and regular
client from then on. Unfortunately after my moving to France he has had to go onto drugs
to control his blood pressure, but I feel very content that the oils worked so very well
and I can confidently recommend them to you all.
Bit of a saga, but one I thought worth the telling.
