The following report was done by the Fort O'Brien Eighth Grade and  published in the Bangor Daily News on January 24, 2000 as part of a local town history project.

Time line of Machiasport

May 1907
Town boundary lines are sureyed and verified

November 1915

The tug Phoenix arrives in Machiasport to start many
years of service towing barges of lumber and other
products, and salvaging wrecked ships.

April 1917

The town selectmen were authorized to issue
clamming permits.  This local industry has since

March 1922

Fire destorys a portion of Machiasport.

World War I

Kuhn House used as Navy barracks.

1940's

Major fire destorys sardine industry here.

World War II

Bucks Harbor Air Station, which became
the Downeast Correctional Facility, is established.

1970's

Oil refinery proposed to be located here.
Strong opposition due to its environmental
impact turns away the industry.

June 14, 1976

During the Bicentennial Celebration, the town
dedicates the new Rim Bridge joining Machiasport
and East Machias to four Revolutionary War heroes
who fought at the Battle of Fort Foster.

1992

During the Persian Gulf War, the USS O'Brien
participates in the naval blockade of Iraq.
This ship was named in honor of Machiasport
Revolutionary War hero Capt. Jeremiah O'Brien.

1994

To help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the
Normandy Invasion during WWII, the SS Jeremiah
O'Brien, an original participant of the invasion,
is refurbished and sails again to France.  This was
the first ship named to honor Capt. O'Brien

1995

The Maine Department of Economic and community
Development grants $400,000 for the expansion
of the aquaculture industry in Machiasport.  This
industry promises to be a key economic
factor in the new century.
