Saddest lullaby

by Patty R

Rating: G

It was a memory she'd lived but could never bring to mind. She was so very young, not understanding the importance of it all for many years to come.

Kathyrn was looking at her parent's picture when the flutter of a long passed reminder touched her as would the tender wings of a butterfly. For an instant she remembered being held in two strong arms as they carried her to bed. Her nose had a sprinkling of freckles and her red hair whispered down half her back. She couldn't have been more than four or five years old when it had happened.

She could still recall the cologne her father wore as he rocked her back and forth, easing her into sleepiness. The sound of his voice as he sang out a special lullaby to her.

"A tiny turned up nose.
Two cheeks just like a rose.
She's something Heaven has sent.
This little girl of mine.

No one will ever know,
Just what her coming has been.
She's all the world to me.
She climbs upon my knee.

She's something Heaven has sent,
This little girl of mine."

Kathryn's eyes watered slightly while she set the picture back down on her bureau and looked across the room to where her husband rocked their own child to sleep. His voice held each note beautifully as they rolled off his tongue.

His words were only now known to her, Chakotay had but recently taught her his ancient language so she also could sing little Gabby to sleep.

"May all your dreams bloom like daisies in the sun
May you always have stars in your eyes
May you not stop running on until your race is won
May you always have blue skies

A dream is something all your own to keep within your heart
To build on when you're glad or when your world's been torn apart
A dream is something all your own that no one else can steal
A dream is something you can make come real

May all your dreams bloom like daisies in the sun
May you always have stars in your eyes
May you not stop running on until your race is won
May you always have blue skies

Now you can share a laugh with any stranger on the street
And you can share your money with a beggar on the street
But you can only share your dream when love has set it free
So please, won't you share yours with me?

May all your dreams bloom like daisies in the sun
May you always have stars in your eyes
May you not stop running on until your race is won
May you always have blue skies."

Chakotay looked towards his wife as he finished the song and was amazed at how beautiful she looked merely standing there. A touch of moonlight showed her lovely face against the darkness of their bedroom and one of her curls had escaped the braided hair and was settled against her neck. Her blue eyes seemed sad for a moment and he instinctively understood why. In the years of their marriage it had become second nature to be able to read her feelings.

Standing up he slowly walked over to the crib in the other room, lay their daughter down and tucked her in. The beautiful child made not a sound all the while. Chakotay made his way back to the rocking chair, sat down and without a word, patted his lap.

Kathryn walked over and snuggled into Chakotay's reassuring embrace, tucking her head underneath his chin. With a gentle motion he rocked the chair while he sang the same lullaby to his wife.

The end.
