Notes ID & Password Problems?
When relocating to a new workstation, Lotus Notes users sometimes encounter problems with setting up their existing User ID file (*.id) on their new Notes installation. For example, Notes might display the error message, "User ID corrupted." Or Notes might fail to recognize your password. However, it is possible that there is nothing wrong with the User ID file itself: it is just the wrong type of User ID file for that version of Notes.
Lotus Notes Versions
There are two versions of Lotus Notes currently being used at Shell: Lotus Notes version 3.2 and Lotus Notes version 3.3.
Types of ID Files
There are two types of User ID files employed at Shell: "Notes" and "Desktop." The "Notes" type of User ID file is recognized by both Lotus Notes version 3.2 and Lotus Notes version 3.3. The "Desktop" type of User ID file, however, requires Lotus Notes version 3.3. In other words, the "Desktop" User ID file is not compatible with Notes version 3.2.
Thus the User ID files may be used as follows:
User ID File Type |
Notes Version |
Notes |
3.2 or 3.3 |
Desktop |
3.3 only |
Check for Compatibility
- Step 1: To check the version of Lotus Notes being used, click on Help on the menu bar, then click on About Notes. Look for the version ("release") number in the fine print at the very bottom of the window. Record the version number.
- Step 2: To display information about the User ID file, select Tools / User ID / Information. Notes will display the user's official Notes Address Book name, the name of the User ID file, and the ID Type (see graphic below). Record the displayed information.
- Step 3: Now check the version number and the User ID type against the table above. If your installation of Lotus Notes is version 3.2, you will need the "Notes" type of User ID file. The "Desktop" type of User ID will not be compatible.
If you need to obtain a new User ID file for your new workstation, contact the MIX Network Help Desk at (713) 241-0220.
