What I Have Learned About Spiritual Leadership
by Rev. Paul A. Hughes, M.Div.
The true spiritual leader . . .
- is loathe to claim his authority.
- is characterized by remarkable humility.
- considers himself nothing, the Lord everything.
- does not appoint himself everyone else's advisor, as if he knew all the
answers and others need to seek his approval.
- can wait on the Lord indefinitely, and will not be hurried by other agendas.
- bases all his decisions on the Lord's will.
- never strives to accomplish God's work in his own strength.
- does not trust in his own abilities.
- does not question God.
- is as content with obscurity as with visibility.
- eschews personal honors and acclaim.
- cares nothing for recognition or credit.
- naturally mentors others, raises up spiritual leaders in kind.
- feels no need to defend himself against criticism.
- is willing to be misunderstood.
- finds joy not in being successful, but in being faithful.
