The sin most offensive to God is that of presumption. Presumption typically applies not to unbelievers, who sin in ignorance, but to believers, who should know better. As demonstrated by many of the Biblical examples, God's judgment can be grievous.
It is presumption . . .
To make your own plans, then ask the Lord to bless them (Deuteronomy 12:8; Judges 17:6, 21:25; Psalm 81:12).
To praise God with your mouth while your heart is far from him (Isaiah 29:13, Matthew 15:8).
To "live like heaven on Sunday and hell on Monday," i.e., hypocrisy (Ezekiel 33:31-32, Matthew 7:26-27, 23:14-29).
To sin with impunity because of grace (Ezekiel 18:4, Galatians 5:13, Hebrews 6:4-6, James 4:4, 1 Peter 2:16).
To teach man-made rules as if they were God's (Isaiah 29:13, Matthew 15:9, Titus 1:14).
To seek to glorify oneself (Psalm 36:2, Mark 10:37-45, Acts 12:21-23).
To prophesy your own words in God's name (Jeremiah 14:14, 23:2; Lamentations 2:14; Zechariah 10:2; Ezekiel 13:2-3; Matthew 7:5, 24:11; Acts 13:6, 1 John 4:1).
To follow your own desires in opposition to God's laws and God's will (Numbers 15:39, Proverbs 3:7, John 14:15).
To seek revelation (i.e., answers) from a source other than God (Exodus 22:18, Deuteronomy 18:10-12, 1 Samuel 28:7-9, Acts 16:16-18).
To seek blessings intended for others (Genesis 27:36, Exodus 20:17, Matthew 20:23, Luke 12:15, John 21:22).
To attempt to use God's power for personal gain (Numbers 22:12-34, Acts 8, Romans 16:18).
To lie to the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:1-11).
To introduce human ideas and devices into that which is supposed to be spiritual and miraculous ("strange fire", Leviticus 10:1-11; Numbers 20:8-12).
To rely on good works and the form of righteousness for salvation (Romans 2:17-29, 10:3; 2 Timothy 3:5).
To intrude into the sacred without God's sanction (1 Samuel 13:8-14, 2 Chronicles 26:16-21, Acts 19:14-16).
To allow fear, shyness, self-concern, or any other excuse to stand in the way of obeying God (Exodus 4:10-14; Matthew 8:26, 14:50, 25:24-29, 26:69-75; Revelation 21:8).
(If you can find some other good examples of presumption, along with Biblical support, send them to me and I may add them to the list.)
