Some North American Hominid Species

Here are some more detailed images which present depictions of various species of hominid existent in North America before the last ice age.

Hey! What Is That Thing?!?

The first image presents one such hominid in such a way as to indicate that whoever crafted this image was culturally rather new to the area. The ape-like appearence of this hominid is blended with a characteristic which is quite representative of the intelligent species of reptile also endemic to the area: that being, a widely lobed head which is presented through a perspectival distortion of the relative sizes of the head's two lobes.

Presumably, the person who crafted this artifact was alluding to some general confusion as to the relationship between the hominids of the area and the intelligent reptiles which also lived in that vicinity: so, either this person and his/her culture hadn't been in contact with these two species long enough to clearly differentiate between them; or, conditions existed under which the two creatures might be mistaken for each other; or, these two creatures shared a certain common attitude with regard to their interactions with humans.

Indeed, this image articulates into another such composite (through rotating the artifact in question by 90 degrees); and this leads me to speculate that perhaps both the person that crafted this artifact, and that person's culture, were somewhat new to the area and in the process of actively encountering beings with whom there had been little contact previously.

But that, of course, is just my own cursory impression; and this impression needs to be expanded, modified, or refuted though a careful, detailed, and thorough study of this artifact (and others like it... AS IF!).

An Apparent Homo Erectus

I also have a more detailed scan presenting the image of what appears to be a Homo Erectus. Of course, there are other hominid images apparent within the image area being presented here; and the H. Erectus itself appears as a non-metrical composite, with facial features that compositionally shift between several different aspects.

Sagittally Crested Hominids

Here is a more detailed presentation of the image which presents the sagittally crested hominids. This photograph was taken using Konica Impressa 50ASA film and an Olympus 50mm macro lens; and because the negative was scanned directly using a Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 digital film scanner (which, for all you digital camera buffs, brings 41 megapixels of imaging power to bear upon each 35mm film frame it scans), it has much more detail than the other images I've presented of the same subject matter - which were scanned, from commercially produced 4X6 inch photographs, using whatever desktop scanner I could borrow at the time to do so.

There are a lot of great hominid images within this photograph; but note particularly how the image of the 'female' hominid on the left (facing right) exhibits a non-metrical composition of image areas (something also evident with the 'hominid or reptile' image presented above). Above what appears to be the face of a human female, a hominid female face blends down into that of the human; and the shadow the human female casts to the right has the developed brow ridge and pronounced jaw of a hominid species! Note also how the entire facial composite is itself enclosed by a larger shadowed outline which presents a larger version, in side view, of the head, face and shoulders of a sagittally crested hominid (facing slightly upward, and to the right).

Spot the North American Hominid

And then, there is this wonderful expanse of imagery, whereupon one might amsue oneself for hours playing a game which might be called:

"Where's Homi?"
