The Old Ones tell us to be true to ourselves. The Self is the innermost core being that is you. Shed all pretense, all act, all masks; strip it all away to reveal the part of you that is Divine -- the Self.
Being true to ourselves often seems a dangerous endeavor. Being true to ourselves may mean disagreeing with loved ones to the point of causing emotional pain to all involved. It may mean refusing to follow the road the group, to which we belong, decides to take. It may mean leaving behind close friends who no longer understand the ideals we strive to reach. It may mean standing alone when our closest family no longer nurtures our growth. It may mean walking for a time alone, because none of our present companions understand what we seek -- they do not hear the drummer we are marching to.
Goddess helps us to learn who we are. That learning can be painful, but it is always empowering. We find our Selves by acknowledging all the virtues and vices that make up our Total Being, and enhancing the virtues while correcting the vices. This is a constant process, a slow process -- but a process that is ever rewarding. The closer we come to our Selves, the closer we come to Serenity.
Our Self is our inner person who is always calm and centered, untainted and unmolested -- and always accepting of everything that has Our Mark on it. Everything that has gone before, everything that has happened to us and by us, all our dreams and nightmares -- all of it is Us, and is acceptable as long as we walk in love with Goddess.
Our Inner Selves are our Guides, our Protectors, our Voices.
Or, perhaps it as Coretta Scott King philosophized...
The self is a calm stable center surrounded by a continuous changing sea. Merge with yourself and be ready for any emergent sea.
