The Peony Alcove

Goals lead us. Goals give us direction. Goals entice us. Without goals we flounder. Without goals we wander aimless. Without goals we are not interested (or interesting). Goals are the food of self-definition. Goals are the drink of self-motivation. Goals are the sleep of self-exhilaration. Goals give our progress through life meaning, they make our pursuit of them a Journey.

However, once attained, a goal immediately becomes simply a stepping stone toward another goal, or it becomes as if it were ever nothing. From goal to goal, from stepping stone to stepping stone, one step followed by another step. Goals become part of the pursuit of yet other goals, they define our life-path as a Journey.

The Goal and the Journey are one and the same. Every moment of the Journey is a new Goal achieved. Every Goal achieved is a new moment in the Journey.

We tend to focus on the Goals and ignore the Journey. We cheat ourselves of fulfillment when we do not acknowledge, accept and enjoy the Journey. The Journey is ever present, hence the achievement of Goals is ever present. Self-definition, self-motivation and self-exhilaration are ever present when we live the Journey to its fullest. To live in the moment is to live life. One day at a time, let go and live.

Or maybe it is as Ursala K. LeGuin poetically stated...

It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.
