Emu Dromaius novaehollandiae and Brolga, Grus rubicundus
At the next waterhole up Emu had a mob of chicks, and Brolga he had a big mob too. And old Emu come round that side, top side, call this place up here Cleanskin, come down now, and he run into old Brolga. "Oh, you're here!"
"Well yeah."
Emu bin hide them baby bla him, he get 'em and take 'em two. "Come on, you two, come with me, we're going to see old Brolga here."
Brolga had a big mob bla him, all them baby one. Brolga down on the water, look. All right. He go.
"Hey! You got a big mob of kids!" Old Emu said to Brolga now.
"Yeah, why? I gotta have a kids, I like kids."
"No! You should kill them all. I got nothing, I got only two!"
Well he's thinking now, Brolga, I can't do that.
"You kill 'em!"
Ah, he end up killing them too, them kid bla him. Kill 'em, back of their neck. Kill the lot, only left two.
"That's right, I got two too. These two he's mine." Yeah. And he cry, old Brolga crying, thinking of his babies, ah I think I killed my babies. Cry, cry.
Old Emu says, "I'll go, I'll go toilet." He left. He's cooking lily too, you know, made a big fire, got 'em all tucker eh. He go up and get them babies bla Emu now, Emu get that babies. Get 'em, come running now straight down la water, just a look!
Brolga sing out, "You think to fool me, to kill my baby."
"Ah ha," he laugh. "I'll catch you!" Old Emu said. Oh yeah, old Emu he was a still fly, he well fly, yeah, but he mistake right here, he shouldn't have kill them you know, baby bla Brolga. He made a mistake, old Emu.
All right, he crying out for his babies, you know, old Brolga, cry, cry. They end up fighting, you know, "Come on, give me fight!" Get a stick, yamstick, you know, old Brolga fight, old Emu hit him, right here [on the head]. See that red head top here - that when he's bleeding, yamstick, but old Brolga still get up, fight, hit him across there [stomach], make him sit down. Hit him again. "You beat me" old Emu said, "Yeah, that'll be right." He's thinking now, old Brolga's thinking now, I know what I want to do. "Come on, I'll take you, you coming with me?"
"I'm really sick, I can't go," old Emu said. "I'm very sick."
"Come on, I'll carry you." He pick him up, up, took him up, way up, flied, you know, take old Emu with him. Take him, take him. Come down again. Leave him there. "You'll be right here, till I get second wind."
When him get that second wind, take him way up, must be two hundred feet! Let him got from top then, and he fall right here, in the middle here. Drop him right there. And old Brolga flying on top, fly, look, going down. He fall right there, right there fall him, drop him there. And him Brolga flying round now. Right, burn his [Emu's] arms now. He come from there, drag him out, "You all right?"
"Yeah, I'm no good. I got a broken back."
"Oh yeah, well come on. Here, I'll open this ashes here, old ashes, put your arm..." He open, burn him [Emu] right up there [one arm] "All right, try this other one, burn right up there [other arm].
All right he said, "You not, you can't fly like me fly", he tell that old Emu, you know. Brolga said. "Like me fly, you, you don't fly, you just run along the ground. You can't fly." He talk to old Emu. All this arms are burnt off, where they gone. He only got little arms now, about that long. He big Emu, eh, but he got little small arm. But Brolga got long, he fly. All right, he be telling him, he telling Emu, "You run along the ground."
Right, him fly from there, Brolga, keep them two little kids bla him, go way up there, go way down thataway, must be over this way, round thataway, till him get thataway, to Coleman now, to Coleman River. He find him, you see, oh yeah, this is Brolga story, all right, he lived there, Today you see a stone, in the middle. That Brolga story, he still there, that's the stone stand in the middle.
