The black-headed monitor, Varanus tristis (family Varanidae), is a smallish goanna, varying in colour from pale to dark grey or dark brown. It is arboreal but also common in rocky crevices. Because of its arboreal habit it is not as conspicuous as the larger Gould's goanna, Varanus gouldii. All goannas are valued as sources of meat.
