Juvenile to Adult

When wolves are young the rest of the pack treats them accordingly to their experience are so are treated as underlings. Yet the pups also have their own pecking order. Within the pups there usually is a 'leader'. This order tends to stay true and the alpha among the pups is most like to become the alpha in the future.

When first learning to hunt, (as they are not taught right away) they are assigned to positions that are the least dangerous and are given the chance to watch their elders. In this way they can see failures and successes and learn equally from both.

Pups have a good life. There job is to eat, sleep, and play. Now this may seem so simple, but actually each aspect of the pup's life is very interesting.

Typical ideas of play are chasing leaves or pouncing and tousling with brothers and sisters or maybe even just curiously sniffing at various objects. Each of these activities may seem like mere games to the pups, but they are actually aquiring some very important skills for life later on.

What do wolf pups eat exactly? Did you say exactly what adult wolves eat? Nrrr! A meal to them is something that the parents bring home to them. So? Well the pups will walk up to an adult and nip at one of the adult's muzzes. In response the adult will regurgitate its food and the pups will eat it. The stomach is the original take home containor.

Earlier I mentioned that wolves do not learn to hunt right away. So what happens to the pups who cannot yet hunt? Well it works a lot like it does in human society. A teenager is often elected to act as babysitter. Now just like in human society the wolf pups aren't always the easiest to take care of, yet the elected babysitter tries to be stern. Why you may ask? This is becouse it is one of the few chances that the teenager gets to be top dog. *G* Kinda sounds familar doesn't it?

When a wolf is full grown it can do several things. It can stay within the pack or it can be independent and form its own pack. Either way a wolf pack is basically an extended family.
