Living Spiritually
...each of us is here to discover our true Self...
that essentially we are spiritual beings
that have taken manifestation in physical form.
Were not human beings
that have occasional spiritual experiences ~
its the other way around:
were spiritual beings
that have occasional human experiences.
~ Deepak Chopra
Commentary
Each of us is involved in our own search for spiritual
knowledge and wisdom, for the Truth about our existence. [Action on this path is called
sadhana by the people of the East]. Some of us are very quiet in this arena, seemingly
focused on the stuff of the materialistic "real world". For special others this
quite in the foreground and part of every intentional act. Whatever our
activities...ultimately this is what we are doing here ~ working out our spiritual life.
The knowledge, the realization of the True or Higher Self, the actualization and
expression of this Higher Self is our supreme purpose. Although you need an ego to get on
the bus, and certainly we are all in school to get the human curriculum, this is the true
work...to discover and explore the spiritual essence of our being and to learn how to
relate with Spirit.
A friend of mine got the message through to me with this
phrase: "You are the love of God." This is so simple, yet profound and
inspiring. We are the manifest expression of Gods love and this is that
which constitutes us. How soon and easily we forget what once we certainly knew. Too often,
we subordinate our active involvement in our spiritual curriculum to the demands of our daily
human existence. This problem can only be remedied by focused diligence, by approaching life with
a constant spiritual outlook and by employment (and sometimes deployment) of spiritual discipline.
Our greatest good, our easiest and most powerful path, is when we are there with Spirit.
Without this inspirational boost existence can be very dull, lifeless and kind of a drag. As we look
around we see people caught up in their human struggle and notice how they make life
unnecessarily difficult. This is less obvious when it involves ourselves.
What is the
remedy? I believe the answer is a discipline of spiritual practice integrated into daily life and a
dedicated quest for self-realization. We can greatly benefit from spiritual constancy, a
persistent awareness and daily redirection of ourselves back to a spiritual perspective.
We need to learn to walk with Spirit. By focusing on our breathing; by staying mindful; by
cultivating inner peace; by constantly monitoring and correcting thought, attitude,
intention and action; by spiritual study; by connecting with our Higher Self and Higher Purpose, we are
continuously reminded that we are in fact spiritual beings who are confronted with the
difficult vicissitudes of a human experience. These difficulties are the source of our
pain ~ this mindfulness practice is the path of our liberation.
Spiritual Practice
True liberation is only available with the realization of
spiritual truth
We are in our essence Spirit. Even though we have taken material form
and live in a material world, our true essence lies beyond this physical plane. Although
we can take this on faith as this certainly correlates with our inner knowing and wisdom,
it often takes profound experience to convert this idea into a deep reality that we can
grasp and retain. We need to learn to put our lives in perspective and not "sweat the
small stuff. "We need to awaken to our spiritual Self and work towards
Self-realization. We need to connect with our Truth; to connect with Spirit and bring
Gods light to our life. This is the purpose of dedicated spiritual practice. Here
are some things you might want to do:
Make a purpose statement that will remind you who you really
are and why you are here. Then commit it to memory and read it or recite it daily. Perhaps
it is merely to "live and learn". One of my clients shared his purpose with me:
"My purpose is to know God and teach and express Gods love." He can recite
this at any time and has not felt the need to alter it.
Create an area in your house that is dedicated to spiritual
practice... an area for study, prayer and meditation
a place you connect with your
Higher Self. Start and end your day here.
Exercise your body and learn to BREATHE.
Bring a physical reminder (A statue, a picture,
etc..) of your spiritual life to work.
Collect and surround yourself with music that
lifts your mood and inspires you.
Turn the lights down and burn candles and/or
incense and get quiet.
Decorate your house with warm, natural
color. Bring in flowers.
Do a service for someone everyday, just for the Love of
it
volunteer somewhere.
Ask yourself:
- How important is Spirit in my
life. What priority do I truly place on it?
- How am I aware and
how aware am I of my spiritual essence?
- How have I had a
directly experienced spirit in my life?
- Do I stay "On
Purpose" in my daily interactions and activities?
- Do I maintain a
spiritual perspective? Do I let Light shine in?
- How
well do I handle
the distractions of ego and of daily living?
- Do I dedicate
enough of my time and energy to my spiritual practice?
- What practices
would I like to add or remove to this discipline?
- What am I missing?
- Do I practice
compassion for myself and others?
-
- For your consideration ~
-
- Remember this: We are all spirit incarnated into a particular
form and that we are
- all ultimately connected, one, a part of the all. Lets
not allow ourselves to become
- confused and distracted by the circumstances and events of
life, which seem to
- obfuscate this fact. Living a spirit centered, spirit driven
life affords us an inner
- peace that makes this all worthwhile.

I would like to leave you with this quote from the end of
Deepak Chopras
The Seven Spiritual
Laws of Success
Cosmic Journey
We are travelers on a cosmic journey ~
stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools
of infinity.
Life is eternal.
But the expressions of life are ephemeral, momentary,
transient.
Gautauma Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, once said,
this existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds.
To watch the birth and death of beings is like looking at the
movements of a dance.
A lifetime is like a flash of lightning in the sky.
Rushing by like a torrent down a steep mountain.
We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other,
to meet, to love, to share.
This is a precious moment, but it is transient.
It is a little parenthesis in eternity.
If we share with caring, lightheartedness, and love,
we will create abundance and joy for each other.
And then this moment will have been worthwhile.
~ Deepak Chopra
My sentiments, exactly.
