Coursework
From the start of the course all your written work will be in preparation for your coursework. It must be carefully filed and in M5 you will produce 3 or 4 units of work, one of which will be in controlled conditions in the summer exams. Over the summer holiday a further unit will be required and if necessary a second controlled piece can be written in the January mock exams of U5.
Ultimately you will choose to include the 3 best units of work, one of which must be done under controlled conditions.
These units will be from:
Familie or Haus
Medienstar
*Schule* or Arbeit
*Reisen*
* = written under controlled conditions
You may be issued with one task or a variety of differentiated tasks.
Normally you will write a draft version and with the help of a guidance sheet you will have the chance to re-work the piece once only.
You may make use of stimulus material as issued, a dictionary, Kernpunkte grammar book and your own vocabulary and grammar notes.
You are not allowed to receive help with the writing of the piece from a parent, friend, other pupil, native speaker or your teacher or to copy it from elsewhere or download it from the internet.
There are however examples of good
practice on the German Department website.
Nobody can correct the work for you. You must therefore develop the ability to spot the mistakes and correct them yourself.
Marks will be awarded for Communication, Quality of Language and Accuracy and you will be encouraged to follow the requirements of the mark scheme as you write. You will be issued with a mark scheme but here are examples for Grades C and A:
Grade C Majority of tasks completed; beginning to express opinions; appropriate and accurate use of verb tenses; correct grammar in simple short sentences plus some longer sentences where grammar is not always correct; use of adjectives and adverbs; subordinated clauses used; piece well linked; effective use of reference material; some ambiguity; half of what is written should be free of major errors.
Grade A Full response to task/stimulus; detailed description and arguments fully justified; well researched, imaginative, clear time sequence, coherent and pleasant to read; confident use of complex grammatical structures and varied vocabulary with high level of accuracy regarding spelling, genders agreements and verb endings.
For the controlled conditions of the exam you will need to bring your task sheet (issued in advance) and you will only be allowed a dictionary. No other books or notes.
You may only present one draft of this work and must therefore
prepare and learn your material beforehand using the guidance
notes for all coursework.
