Snowfall Closes School - January 28, 2000

 January 28, 2000

School was closed on Friday January 28 because of a snowstorm that moved into Alabama. There was plenty of warning before the storm, in fact it was announced that school would be closed on Thursday before the end of school.

The weather forcast- ers first predicted 1-3 inches of snow and later revised their estimates to 4-8 inches. But the big snow never materialized and we received about 2 inches of snow in the Fultondale area.

The amount of snow around the school seemed even lighter than that of neighborhoods only a few miles away. Roads were still passable, and traffic was hindered very little. The new gazebo (shown at left), received it's first taste of the wintery substance.
The wide open spaces created by the harvest of the pine trees in the front of the school seemed even wider when covered with their blanket of white. The new growth of grass there has softened the look of the front of the school and allowed passers-by to see the school from the road.
The football stadium seemed eerily silent in it's white frosting. No crashing sounds of  battle nor echoes of drums, trumpets, and tubas bounced from the walls of the pines. The snow created, at least for a short time, a quiet winter wonderland.

Ms. Rudzki's Class Very Specific

Ms. Rudzdi's 1st block Chemistry class is engaged in lab work to determine specific heat. The lab is reinforcing accuracy and precision in measurement . At the left, Jaketha Moore and Coy Booth confirm their measurements, while Adrian Briles records their results.

Ms. Rudzki's students will be making an experimental determination of specific heat for a particular metal. In the picture at right, John Paxton and Jackson Ray look on as Kristen Nixon measures the liquid used in their experiment.

Each group will then record their data and compare their Cp values to known values and calculate their percent of error. Teamwork is the key to a successful experiment. At the left team members Laura Yates and Tara Burkett confirm their measurement.

Mrs. Gilbert's Class Uses Internet for Endangered Species Research

Mrs. Gilbert's 8th grade Science class has taken advantage of Fultondale High's new computer lab to study endangered species around the world. The recently completed lab is equipped with 20 new computers that have been networked and tied into the county internet service.
This means that any teacher can take an entire class to the lab and do internet study or research. In the past, Mrs. Gilbert's class has been forced to share 3 computers to complete their lessons. Now, each student has his/her own computer to acquire information. This has lead to more thorough research.
The class works in teams, which gather information and pictures from the internet. The teams then compile the work and create displays to present their collected data for viewing. Student's seem to enjoy engaging in work that involves the internet. They get excited when they find what they need.

Powder Puff Game A Huge Success

You've never seen legs like these. The 1999 FHS Powder puff football game provided plenty of excitement....and plenty of hairy legs. The Underclass cheerleaders pictured at the left did a great job of cheering on the girls, but their outfits (and padding) gave them all kinds of problems!

The Underclass girls were enthusiastic as they came onto the field at the beginning of the first ever night Powder Puff game, but they proved no match for the senior girls. The seniors won the game 14-7. The gate from the event was donated to charity. Thanks to all involved.
