Most Importantly
You need to have a pen or pencil and paper
ready,
you'll probably want a pen,
I find I break pencil leads
in my frustration by pushing so hard,
or chew them to death for the same reason.

Getting The Number To The Facility
This is much harder than you might think.
You need to know the name of the prison
-jail you want to call.
Hopefully you have a piece of mail from
that institution already,
if you do the name may be stamped on the
envelope.
If not, knowing the location or nearest
towns name should work.
When Calling
directory assistance tell them it's a government
listing, then the facilities name and where
it is.
You could get an opportunity to select whether
you
want visiting or administrationn.
If you do, take both to avoid having
to call directory assistance
again in the future, and write the numbers
in a permanent place.
............................................
If you don't know where the person is being
housed,
you'll absolutely have to know their assigned
state identification number,
because in there - that is their name.
..............................................
To find out where a person is being detained
or serving their sentence
will require a call to your states capitol,
through directory assistance you would
then ask for the corrections departments
inmate location unit or i.d.s and warrants
unit.
remember ! write it in a permanent place
!
and when calling have the state number,
full name and birthdate - not always required,
good to have at the ready.
when calling the location hotline (id warrants)
simply state to the operator that
you want to know
the whereabouts of an inmate.
I always said " I'm looking
for an inmate, do you want their number ?"
I have found it pays to be to the point and polite .
when the operator at the state locator hotline
comes back to you with your information,
be ready,
have your pen poised !
make sure you are spelling it correctly
and if you get them at an hour of the day, or night
(most of these hotline/information units
are 24 hour)
ask if they could possibly give you the
address, or phone number ?
.........................................
If you got the address, you're almost there,
now it's a call to directory assistance
for the town where the prison is
and you know what to do from there.
if not,

................................................
If you got the number, what you need to
know is which department you
want to talk to, and of course:
Be prepared by having
the complete state number, full name and
birthdate
of the person you are calling about.
