It’s not easy...

Poetry type: Any

A poem which tells about the sadness and/or happiness of being a certain way.

Directions:
Read and discuss the poem or play the song, “Bein’ Green,” by Joe Raposo. It is found on many Sesame Street albums and is usually sung by Kermit the Frog.
Compose a poem, rhymed or unrhymed, which begins with the words “It’s not easy....” This poem could be about one’s race, culture, gender, family position, personality or other conditions. Poems usually turn out better if they are serious, and from the heart. The poem may be similar to the model or it may be completely different.

Sample: It’s not easy being a teacher,
Students always put you down,
They call me names behind my back,
And leave trash on the floor,
And steal my things.

It’s not easy being a teacher,
Staying up all night,
Planning a lesson,
and grading papers,
That students just throw away.

But teaching is what I like to do,
I like to meet so many new friends,
When I see a sparkles in the eyes,
Of a student when they understand,
It makes me feel good inside.

It’s not easy being a teacher,
Not being appreciated, respected,
Or remembered,
But in my students I see dreams,
I see hope, I see the future,
And I’m proud to be a teacher.
