Koan
Poetry type: Question
A poem consisting of riddles which usually have no definite answers. There riddles are used for meditation and contemplation.
Directions: Write a line or lines which asks questions which have no definite answers. Each question must end in a question mark.
Sample:
If the sun smiles upon the Earth,
Are we a joke of the universe?
Why do the clouds cry on
Cloudy Days?
Is sadness contagious, or do
We pass it along as a dark gift?
If we walk toward the future,
Are we standing still in the present?

Pablo Neruda has a fine poetry book which deals with these types of unanswerable questions.
