Base-Day: 13 Kan 7 Yax (May 25, 1975) in Extension from the Zero Base-Day 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 3 Kankin (August 14, 1955).
This is a work in progress and purely
experimental. Updates will be done periodically to extend the
length of the table to reach its completion point on February
21, 2008 A. D., if I have counted it out properly from its point
of origin. There will be a lunar eclipse on that day which will
recover the base-day of this Dresden Codex Eclipse Table 11,960
days after 13 Kan 7 Yax (May 25, 1975) listed below in the 0-position
of the Classic Period Table located on page 58b, column B of that
document.
Anyone familiar with the Dresden
Codex Eclipse Table in its original form, of course, will know
immediately that the material presented here is not the same as
the day-name sequence preserved by the Classic Period Eclipse
Table, since the original Table's base-day was 9.16.4.10.8 12
Lamat 1 Muan. The Table presented below is consistent with a point
of departure known as the zero base-day of the Classic Period
Long Count, which I have fixed at Julian Day #563334 (April 29,
3171 B. C.), for reasons discussed elsewhere, and which has been
extended from that day forward in time through the first sequence
of 1,872,000 days to the recovery of its next beginning point
at 13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau 3 Kankin (Julian Day #2435334 on August 14,
1955). From that point forward I have simply extended the count
of the days as the Mayas themselves would have done if there were
no corrections taken in the count as it continues forward from
one 13-Baktun sequence to the next 13-Baktun sequence, each of
which reaches 1,872,000 days in length.
The lunar eclipse on May 25, 1975,
establishes a sequence of lunar and solar eclipses that exactly
matches the structure of the Dresden Codex Eclipse Table and is
the first such eclipse after the terminal point of the Classic
Period LC that can be used successfully as a base-day event for
the original table as the Mayas wrote it 1300 years ago. The day-names
in the eclipse positions are not the same, of course, because
1300 years have passed since the original table was composed.
What the following table represents, therefore, is what the Mayas
might have written now to accommodate a tabular expression of
eclipse occurrences were they still actively engaged in counting
celestial motion with their calendrical system. This table's structure
is exactly consistent with the sequence I reported in "A
Dresden Codex Eclipse Sequence: Projections for the Years 1970-1992,"
Latin American Antiquity 4 (1), 1993, pp.74-93.
The difference between one thing and the other is that I used
the original Dresden Codex day-names in the report (1993), because
I did not then have knowledge of the ancient eclipse sequence,
which begins on June 29, 698 A. D. (Julian Day #1976182), and
did not know the location of the zero base-day (13.0.0.0.0 4 Ahau
8 Cumku); whereas, here, I have used the day-names that extend
naturally and without correction from that point of departure
(April 29, 3171 B. C.) to the present day.
The first eclipse position listed
below identifies a solar eclipse at the 42nd eclipse
position of the Dresden Codex Eclipse Table. The next eclipse
in the sequence is the lunar eclipse I have identified as the
base-day event (as 12 Lamat 1 Muan in the ancient sequence and
as 13 Kan 7 Yax in the modern one) for the Table. This circumstance,
which has always gone unreported in the scholarship because no
one using the Goodman-Martinez-Thompson correlation has ever found
an eclipse sequence to study in the actual context of the Eclipse
Table itself, is a naturally occurring feature of the Eclipse
Table as Mayan astronomers wrote it during the Classic Period.
Eclipses always occur in pairs (one lunar-one solar; or one solar-one
lunar) when they are separated by 177-day intervals. Using two
Eclipse Tables, one for lunar eclipses and the other for solar
eclipses, when they are extended together in parallel sequences
with the same day-name triads, as the Mayas surely must have done,
makes it possible to account for both types of eclipses simultaneously.
The base-day for solar eclipses always follows the base-day for
lunar eclipses by an interval equal to exactly 4,680 days. In
the Table presented below, for instance, 4,680 days after the
lunar eclipse on May 25, 1975, there is a solar eclipse which
occurs on March 18, 1988 (1 Chicchan 3 Yaxkin) which follows naturally
from the one paired with the lunar eclipse on 13 Kan 7 Yax at
the 42nd eclipse position in the solar sequence at
the base-day position for the Table in the final column of its
structure (page 58b, column B). The difference in day-name designation
for the solar eclipse at 1 Chicchan 3 Yaxkin, where it should
be on the day before that (13 Kan 2 Yaxkin), is the result of
its early hour of occurrence at 02 GMT on March 18, 1988. In Central
Standard Time, the eclipse occurred on the previous day (March
17, 1988) at 8 PM and would not have been visible in Mexico.
The table below has this sequence of columns: Julian Day Number; Christian Date; Almanac Day-Name; Haab Day-Name; Numerical Position in the Calendar Round; Eclipse Position, Page and Column Location in the Dresden Codex and the Type of Eclipse. The blue borders represent solar eclipses; the red ones are for lunar eclipses. Mars-Jupiter conjunctions have also been included here for reasons I may or may not ever get around to explaining.
