No power exists except by the authority/establishment of God

Moses' parents, by faith, disobeyed the civil government. "By faith" means being told by God. Be very careful we don't follow our personal opinions.

It is not by chance that this section of obeying government authority is placed in the letter to the Romans

v7 render = recompense (pay back) in Romans 12:17

v8 a literal translation from the Greek is -- "to no one be obligated anything" Deut 15:6 God allows borrowing but forbade Israel from borrowing from neighboring nations. The law forbade usury but still allowed borrowing. The principle to remember is Prov 22:7 -- the borrower is servant to the lender.
Matt 5:42 give twice as much when someone asks to borrow

v9, 10 Note change in order from the 10 commandments and that Paul selected particular sections. These are not man-to-God but man-to-man laws recorded here because of the context -- submission to governmental authority.

Love is an action not a feeling it is demonstrated by what we do not by what we say

v11 live as though Jesus is coming back now but we may have to live like a marathon runner. Today I am one day closer to meeting Jesus than I was yesterday

    v12 Contrasts

  • night vs. day
  • Deeds of darkness vs. Armor/weaponry of light
  • deeds vs. Armor/weaponry
