Leap Frog

Frogs leap, right? Perhaps, but tree frogs climb, toads hop, and some frogs seem to fly. Because they are amphibians, surely they can swim. The amphibians we call 'frogs' are called so due to their long hind legs. The powerful extensor muscles of these long legs propels the frog forward with great dexterity. The short front legs of the frog act as shock absorbers for the landing.

The size of the frog does not necessarily gauge the length of its leap. The largest frog, the Goliath frog of Africa, is actually a poor jumper. The American bullfrog is a large frog that can leap nine times the length of its body. The smaller leopard frog can leap fifteen times its body length. The amazing Southern cricket frog can jump an astonishing thirty-six times its body length.

The climbing tree frogs have been referred to as the acrobatic clowns of the amphibian world. These frogs also have long hind legs. They are also equipped with suction disks on the tips of their fingers and toes for adhesion. They can cling to branches and leaves and stay aloft even in strong winds. In Malaya, Japan, India and other Asian countries, some arboreal frogs have extensive webbing on their hands and feet. They spread the webbing as they jump and use them as parachutes. These 'flying frogs' don't really fly but they can glide beautifully, sometime navigating distances up to 48 feet between trees.

In general the short limbed frogs, called toads, often hop. They do so rather slowly and can be seen slowly hopping in numbers as they migrate to breeding pools. The Senegal running frog (Kassina senegalensis), as its name suggests, walks or runs rather than hops. The Indian water frog (Rana cyanophlyctis) has an astonishing means of locomotion. This frog can actually run across the surface of water for several yards. The Northern cricket frog (Acris crepitans crepitans) of the American East and Southeast also has been known to "skitter" across the water. This frog actually skips or bounces across the surface of the water in a series of rapid jumps..

Today's SMILE

A cheerful heart is good medicine,
but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.
Proverbs 17:22 (NIV)

"What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity. These are but trifles, to be sure; but, scattered along life's pathway, the good they do is inconceivable."

Joseph Addison

A FEW SMILES

Do you knw Me?

A small town prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand in a trial-a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, "Mrs. Jones, do you know me?"

She responded, "Why, yes, I do know you Mr. Williams. I've known you since you were a young boy. And frankly, you've been a big disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you're a rising big shot when you haven't the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you."

The lawyer was stunned. Not knowing what else to do he pointed across the room and asked, "Mrs. Williams, do you know the defense attorney?"

She again replied, "Why, yes I do. I've known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster, too. I used to baby-sit him for his parents. And he, too, has been a real disappointment to me. He's lazy, bigoted, he has a drinking problem. The man can't build a normal relationship with anyone and his law practice is one of the shoddiest in the entire state. Yes, I know him."

At this point, the judge rapped the courtroom to silence and called both counselors to the bench. In a very quiet voice, he said with menace, "If either of you asks her if she knows me, you'll be jailed for contempt!"
