Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one
will see the Lord.
(Hebrews 12:14 NIV)
God's demands are inexorable; only one thing will satisfy Him, and that is
speckless,
spotless holiness, and He will never let us go until He has brought us there - unless we
wrest ourselves out of His hand.

Don't judge! Don't judge a man:
1) by the clothes he wears. His heart may be clothed in spun gold we cannot see;
2) by his family, for Abel and Cain belonged to the same parents;
3) by his speech, if it seems uneducated, for his opportunities may have been few;
4) by what we perceive to be failure in his life. The Sanhedrin and His disciples thought
Christ was a failure;
5) by the neighborhood he lives in. Gold has been found in unusual places and rats and
roaches are found in kings' palaces.

Remember, therefore, it is not thy hold of Christ that saves thee it is Christ; it is not thy joy in Christ that saves thee it is Christ; it is not even faith in Christ, though that be the instrument it is Christ's blood and merits. |
The sweet attractions of the cross will woo and win the man's heart, and he who lived only for this deceitful earth will now have an eye for the upper spheres, and a wing to mount into celestial heights. When grace has won the day the worldling seeks the world to come. |

But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.
Job 16:5 (NIV)
Not Helpful by Cathy Vinson

Is there a presence that the one of faith must actively put outside? This happens several times in Scripture, Matthew 9:25 and Mark 5:40, and low here with Peter in this passage. "...all the widows stood by him weeping, and showing [exhibiting, displaying] the coats and garments which Dorcas made...But Peter put them all out..." Peter's "putting them out" is in the intensive form of the word. It could be translated "cast." It wasn't that he was angry, but their sentiments, their attention to her works were not conducive to the mission Peter had been beckoned to do: to raise Tabitha from the dead. In the same way the Jews told Jesus that the Roman Centurion was "worthy" of Jesus' time and attention (Luke 7:4-5), so it was now with Tabitha. It seems the women were appealing to Peter according to her worth. They cared. Their sympathies, sentiments, proving of her good works, though, were not going to raise their friend from the dead. Peter had just raised a man up from paralysis with the words "Jesus Christ heals you" (Acts 9:34). He heals. He is presently healing, and Peter was in tune with that. What matters is what Jesus is doing. The focus their presence was enforcing had to be cleared out so as to touch this Reality again. When removed, Peter knelt to pray, literally "placed on his knees prayed." Then he turned to the body and rose her up with what Jesus Christ was doing. The body of Tabitha was raised and presented alive. The speed that lumps, cysts, tumors, the threat of cancer is being thrust upon us is accelerating. What is Jesus doing? Is it the day that speaks of the present Jesus presently healing? Let's look at Him right now and become truly helpful. Send a note to Cathy Vinson , the writer of this devotion. |
