Golden Words

Those who control their anger have great understanding; those with a hasty temper will make mistakes.

Proverbs 14:29 (NLT

Anger Symptoms

The obvious symptoms of sudden anger are often red face, swollen neck veins, clenched fists, and a stumbling for words. The angry person’s vision may also be blurred, because anger clouds the visual centers of the brain.

Dr. Walter Cannon, pioneer researcher in psychosomatic medicine at Harvard University describes the symptoms more precisely:

"Respiration deepens; the heart beats more rapidly; the arterial pressure rises; the blood is shifted from the stomach and intestines to the heart, central nervous system, and the muscles; the processes of the alimentary canal cease; sugar is freed from the reserves in the liver; the spleen contracts and discharges its contents of concentrated corpuscles, and adrenaline is secreted. "

— James C. Hefley

September 26

Howard D. Bare shares this insight: "Four men climbed a mountain to see the view. The first wore new and expensive shoes which did not fit, and he complained constantly of his feet. The second had a greedy eye and kept wishing for this house or that farm. The third saw clouds and worried for fear it might rain. But the fourth really saw the marvelous view. His mountaintop experience was looking away from the valley out of which he had just climbed to higher things."

God loves beauty, for He created it. Surely He wants us to cherish and appreciate His gifts. Let us pray to recognize them.

Spurgeon's Evening for September 26

"The myrtle trees that were in the bottom."

- Zechariah 1:8

"Howl, fir tree, for the cedar is fallen."

- Zechariah 11:2

Tempests spend their force upon the craggy peaks of the Alps, but down yonder where flows the stream which maketh glad the city of our God, the myrtles flourish by the still waters, all unshaken by the impetuous wind.

He who does not prepare for death is more than an ordinary fool, he is a madman. ... Be ready, servant of Christ, for thy Master comes on a sudden, when an ungodly world least expects him.

But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

Swelling Out

by Cathy Vinson

And you have been given FULLNESS in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

(Col 2:10)

One theme reigns supreme in this pastorly letter to an early church in Colossae: ALL is in Jesus. In Paul's inspired book, mountain peaks jut out even above the anointed text, peaks that express absoluteness, nothing negated. A few of these...

  • "God was pleased to have ALL His fullness dwell in Him" (1:19)
  • "...in its fullness...the mystery...the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ IN you, the hope of glory" (1:25,26,27)
  • "full riches...to know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hid ALL the treasures..." (2:2,3)
  • "For in Christ ALL the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form" (2:9)

This understanding begins swelling the constrictions of our hearts, and it should..."And YOU have been given fullness in Him, who is the head over every power and authority" (2:10). "over every power and authority" means locks and chains can be broken as our faith rises to this fullness. It spreads to conquer! In His fullness, we may be on the offensive!

God right now IS "making it known" (1:27). As we let, our faith will spread outward, swelling over boundaries established in us and our world.

May the fullness of the One within you (1:27) allow Him to have His creative outlet..."your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions..." (Joel 2:28)
