Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died of kidney failure on this day in 1791 (December 5). Mozart died at one o'clock in the morning. His friend Sussmayr wrote that shortly before Mozart had leafed through his own Requiem and said, ``Didn't I tell you I wrote this for myself?'' Mozart was only 35 years old.  He was just at the height of his creative genius. He had money problems during much of his musical career. He died as a pauper with only the gravedigger attending his burial in a Viennese suburb.

Mozart wrote his first musical composition ate the age of five. He played before the Viennese court at the age of six. He went on a concert tour of Europe at the age of seven. In his short lifetime he wrote more than 600 works, completing his first symphony at the age of nine.
