DECEMBER 9 & 10

GOLDEN WORDS

For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is loyal to Him.

2 Chron. 16:9

The world has yet to see what God will do with a man who is wholly consecrated to Him.

Henry Varley

By the grace of God, I will be that man.

December 9

"`Woe is me, for I am ruined! Be-cause I am a man of unclean lips'...

Then one of the seraphim flew to me, with a burning coal in his hand...and he touched my mouth with it and said, `Behold, this has touched your lips; and your iniquity is taken away, and your sin is forgiven" (Isaiah 6:5-7 NAS). "If anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body as well" (James 3:2).

If our lips are unclean, then it is be-cause our heart is, for "the mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart" (Mat-thew 12:34). Let us pray for a burning coal of grace for our lips and heart.

One of the finest books written on forgiveness is The Freedom of Forgiveness, 70 X 7, by David Augsburger. We learn about love, too: "It is an accepting love which gets its sleeves rolled up and its hands dirty in helping, serving, lifting and changing others' lives into the full freedom of forgiveness...."

The author tells us that, if someone rubs us the wrong way, then love eliminates the "wrong way." "[Forgiveness] gives understanding where the enemy anticipates anger and revenge. It gives back to the other person his freedom and his future."

Truly, it is God's gift to both the one who has hurt and the one who has been hurt.

Excerpts from today's Spurgeon's Devotions

Spurgeon's Morning for December 9

Spurgeon's Evening for December 9

"Therefore will the Lord wait that he may be gracious unto you."

- Isaiah 30:18

"My people shall dwell in quiet resting places."

- Isaiah 32:18

God often DELAYS IN ANSWERING PRAYER. We have several instances of this in sacred Scripture. Jacob did not get the blessing from the angel until near the dawn of day-he had to wrestle all night for it. Peace and rest belong not to the unregenerate, they are the peculiar possession of the Lord’s people, and of them only. The God of Peace gives perfect peace to those whose hearts are stayed upon him.
Spurgeon's Morning for December 10 Spurgeon's Evening for December 10

"So shall we ever be with the Lord."

- 1 Thessalonians 4:17

"Whose heart the Lord opened."

- Acts 16:14

Oh, how sweet the prospect of the time when we shall not behold him at a distance, but see him face to face: when he shall not be as a wayfaring man tarrying but for a night, but shall eternally enfold us in the bosom of his glory. The Lord himself must open the heart, to receive the things which make for our peace. He alone can put the key into the hole of the door and open it, and get admittance for himself. He is the heart’s master as he is the heart’s maker.

God's Character

"Little one, who straight hast come
Down the heavenly stair,
Tell us all about your home,
And the father there."

"He is such a one as I,
Like as like can be.
Do his will, and, by and by,
Home and him you'll see."

Today's  Devotion

But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.

Job 16:5 (NIV)

Only Come!

by Cathy Vinson

We are offered the dignity of choosing. He grants us as humans the honor of choosing a free, willing relationship without force or coercion. If we turn aside, however, from such a wonderful opportunity to walk with God as friends, we are left to be treated as less than human, like the horse or mule that must be FORCED to come, who must have rules and restraints to go through life. Are you being pulled by a bridle between clenched teeth because you resist coming willingly?

Why do we hold back? Scripture tells us shame and guilt in our consciences repel us from the open offer (Hebrews 9:14; Hebrews 10:38). How do we draw near against these strong resistances within us?

Psalm 32 describes David as he passes in and out of each day with a transgression sapping his strength "as in the heat of summer." "Then I acknowledged my sin to You and did not cover up my iniquity. I said 'I will confess my transgressions to the Lord,'--and You forgave the guilt of my sin. Then let everyone...pray to You while You may be found" (Psalms 32:5-6a).

Because David CAME forward to confess, he was clothed with protection and surrounded with songs of deliverance and the Lord's unfailing love (Psalms 32:7,19).

Again in Hebrews 4:14-5:2 we see the Lord's answer toward our drawing back because of weakness and proness to sin. In Jesus and the splendid path He walked and overcame, weakness has become a password to being granted mercy and grace. "Ignorance and going astray" ironically allow us the position to "approach the throne of grace with confidence" (Hebrews 4:16).

Just come. Don't shrink back. Don't be humbled to the status of a horse and mule. For it isn't the sinLESS that is called blessed, but the "one whose transgressions ARE FORGIVEN, whose sins ARE COVERED" (Psalms 32:1). As with David, it is the one who comes!

"Do not be like the horse or the mule, which have no understanding, but must be controlled by bit and bridle or they will NOT COME to you"

(Psalm 32:9)

We are offered the dignity of choosing. He grants us as humans the honor of choosing a free, willing relationship without force or coercion. If we turn aside, however, from such a wonderful opportunity to walk with God as friends, we are left to be treated as less than human, ...
