"Drying Up" by Tim Knappenberger |
In Northeast Ohio we had a very wet spring
this year. You could almost see the grass growing under
your feet. Mowing became a 2-3 time per week ritual. The
Ohio River swelled its banks from Marietta to Cincinnati,
hurting thousands along its path. People began wondering
if it would ever dry out. It did. Within a few days of the rain’s ceasing, lush lawns began turning brown and gardens lapped up every bit of moisture sprinkled on them. You would have thought that the supply of Spring soak would have lasted well into August. It didn’t. Metaphor-minded as I am, I couldn’t help but draw parallels from nature’s dependence on the rain to our’s on God’s Spirit. No matter how much we may bathe in His Spirit one day, we are just as needful of doing the same the next. Great worship service last Sunday! Wasn’t last Wednesday’s prayer group especially intimate and moving? What a particularly tender time of devotion you had this morning. Wonderful as all of these are, you will need to return to God’s throne of grace tomorrow for another portion. Thankfully for us, He is even more anxious to pour out His Spirit than we are to receive it. If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!" (Luke 11:13). As grass dries up, so spiritually do we. It’s amazing how quickly we drop from our "mountain-top" spiritual highs to our "valley-of-the-shadow-of-death" lows. Because of this reality, it appears that, Spiritually speaking, God’s design of us is that we possess short extension cords instead of large gas tanks. Always in connection with, fed by, and close to Himself. Where this comparison breaks down is that my lawn and garden are unable to ask for what they need. You are not. Do any of the worthless idols of the nations bring rain? Do the skies themselves send down showers? No, it is you, O LORD our God. therefore our hope is in you, for you are the one who does all this. (Jer 14:22 - NIV) |

like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering
the earth" (Psalms 72:6 - NIV) |
