But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.
Job 16:5 (NIV)

Servant by Cathy Vinson |
John the Baptist came to a thirsty people and gave them a picture of the One to come. Power, might and judgment highlighted his proclamation of the Messiah. John trembled in himself, realizing the authority of this individual. He shook longing to see His day: the emergence of the Son of God. When he said "whose sandals I am not fit to carry," his gaze of faith fell upon the prominent steps and stride of the approaching One who would baptize with fire. So dedicated, so enthralled by his Master, he wanted to follow at His feet as a servant. He would have followed so closely as to be step-by-step...'He is so mighty, so worthy. I long for Him to tire of His walk that I might have a part of Him by serving Him--just to be there to carry His sandals.' John was THERE for Jesus, only he was "not fit." John the Baptist deserves respect, for his passion after God's Son made him beside himself, even thought to be mad. Longing so, he could not bridge the gap unto the more glorious covenant. "I tell you the truth: Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet He who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he" (Matthew 11:11). John taught us. His passion was after Christ to just carry his sandals, and yet his longed-for right would be given to others...us. In humility may we carry out the most menial task for the Master. He has made us "fit" to carry His sandals. |
