But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief.
Job 16:5 (NIV)
Terrified by Cathy Vinson |
Being terrified may bring certain images to mind, things that would most definitely jar our senses. Though, if need be, we might choose to be terrified rather than horrified. Something that terrifies us could be caused by great awesomeness and power, maybe even good...but never tame. We have a Lord that strikes terror. Throughout the Gospels, different responses of human terror surrounded encounters with the Lord's being and works. But when did we last feel terror? Was is towards God or towards evil? In Luke 12:4-7 we can be sure He who is good is much more fearful than the evil. Mark 4:35-41 reveals something about humanity. The Disciples, a number of whom were seasoned fisherman, experienced no ordinary storm. Actually, a furious squall was drowning them...they were afraid. Mark describes them as being "afraid" of the devilish storm, yet "terrified" at the One who calmed it. In retrospect, they were more at ease in facing the fateful weather than the ramifications of Jesus' authority in calming it. Are we terrified? Has the terribleness of Jesus been left behind in our hearts as we ever tame our religion? The historical Jesus left people sorely amazed. Do we want this same amazement? Jesus says He now has "all authority" (Mt 28:18). His terror is no less. What terrible good might be realized in our hearts, our homes, our neighborhoods if we would touch on who He truly is |
