We headed south towards Hatten, looking for the Abri Hatten. Fortunately for us, it was open. If I were to rate the museums, Abri Hatten would get 3 stars. The inside is magnificently restored. Some of the rooms have been turned into museums with life-sized dioramas, uniforms, helmets, etc. with photos and a description of fighting in the area. Hatten has a facade of 60 metres, one of the largest in the area and housed 200 men. The museum also included vintage artillery pieces, trucks, and tanks. Their display on top of the Abri was distracting, however, the condition of the interior made up for that.

Our final destination for the first day was what I consider to be one of the most enjoyable — Ouvrage du Schoenenbourg. I have been to Schoenenbourg 4 times — each time the visit has improved over the last. One aspect that I particularly enjoy about Schoenenbourg is the ability to wander on your own. While there are guided tours, the visit is set up to be self-guided. I prefer this method because I can spend as much time in a particular area as I wish and I can take photos without a group of people in my way.
One very unusual aspect of Schonenbourg is its Entreé d'Hommes (so-called Men's Entrance). This entrance was rebuilt after the war and bears no resemblance to the original, (see La Ligne Maginot en Alsace by Jean-Bernard Wahl, pp. 173 and 174), which was destroyed by the Germans in 1945.
I was very impressed by the extent of the renovations done by the AALMA to the interior, which I would say looks as good as new — the lighting is bright, the paint is fresh. All that's missing are the soldiers.
The tour takes about 2 hours and leads you through the Munitions Entrance where you can pass beyond the Porte Blindé and take a right into the defensive firing chamber which flanks the entrance. The 47 mm antitank gun can be moved away and a JM put in its place. From here you pass further into the interior where you are faced with 2 sets of elevators, one for a 2.5 T load and one for a 5 ton.
