The tour returns to the main gallery which extends for approximately 800 metres to the Command Post, which is also superbly restored. This was the heart of the ouvrage and from which all operations were directed.

From here messages were relayed from the observation positions to the infantry and artillery commanders in their respective command posts (see Telephone Central of Galgenberg and Abri de Bockange (below)). From these CPs, orders were transmitted to each combat bloc commander through the use of signalling devices like those found in ships.

For additional photos and Schoenenbourg tour information see AALMA Website. This is AALMA's excellent website and it contains a massive amount of information, including detailed, suggested trips in the Alsace region to the Ouvrages, Casemates, shelters, and the unique Points d'Appui, or strong points in the Haguenau Forest.

This ends our first day's journey. From this point I traveled to Mutzig for a tour of Feste Kaiser Wilhelm II, given graciously by Bernard Bour.
