Isaiah 10:27 And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. The anointing is not a mysterious force or a spooky feeling. The anointing symbolises equipping for service and is associated with the outpouring of the Spirit of God (I Samuel 10:1, 9; 16:13; Isaiah 61:1; Zechariah 4:1-14; Acts 10:38; I John 2:20, 27). To put oil on the head or body was a general custom in the east (e.g. Ruth 3:3). To cease anointing was a sign of mourning (II Samuel 14:2; Daniel 10:3). Anointing was a token of respect to a guest, the omission of which was a failure in the matter of hospitality (e.g. Luke 7:38, 46). Metaphorically, to be anointed with oil expressed spiritual joy and refreshment (Psalm 23:5; 45:7; 92:10; Isaiah 61:3). This custom is continued among Arabians to this day. Anointing with oil was also used for medicinal purposes and was applied to the sick and to their wounds (Psalm 109:18; Isaiah 1:6; Matthew 6:13; James 5:14). More importantly, the Bible refers to a sacred anointing. In the Old Testament persons and things were anointed to signify consecration to a holy or sacred use. Jacob did this in Genesis 28:16-19 Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it." He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven." So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top. He called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz. The High Priest was anointed (Exodus 29:29; Leviticus 4:3) and the tabernacle and its furniture (Exodus 30:26). The three Old Testament ministries were all anointed, and they were kings (Judges 9:8; I Samuel 16:13; II Samuel 2:4; I Kings 1:34); priests (Exodus 28:41); and prophets (I Kings 19:16; I Chronicles 16:22; Psalm 105:15). David was anointed three times in connection with his kingship. First, prospectively (I Samuel 16:13) then as king over Judah (II Samuel 2:4) and then over all Israel (II Samuel 5:3). The phrase "The Lords anointed" was used throughout Scripture to designate the king chosen by God (I Samuel 12:3; Lamentations 4:20). The importance and solemnity of the anointing is shown in three points. 1. It was an offence meriting excommunication to compound the anointing oil for a common purpose "You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. 'It shall not be poured on anyone's body, nor shall you make any like it in the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 'Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a layman shall be cut off from his people."' (Exodus 30:32-33) 2. The anointing carried such authority that, for example, while Jehus fellow-commanders scorned Elisha as a madman, they did not dare resist the implications of his action, but accepted without question that he who was anointed as king must indeed be king. Now Elisha the prophet called one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, "Gird up your loins, and take this flask of oil in your hand and go to Ramoth-gilead. "When you arrive there, search out Jehu the son of Jehoshaphat the son of Nimshi, and go in and bid him arise from among his brothers, and bring him to an inner room. "Then take the flask of oil and pour it on his head and say, 'Thus says the LORD, "I have anointed you king over Israel."' Then open the door and flee and do not wait." So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went to Ramoth-gilead. When he came, behold, the captains of the army were sitting, and he said, "I have a word for you, O captain." And Jehu said, "For which one of us?" And he said, "For you, O captain." He arose and went into the house, and he poured the oil on his head and said to him, "Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, 'I have anointed you king over the people of the LORD, even over Israel. 'You shall strike the house of Ahab your master, that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the LORD, at the hand of Jezebel. 'For the whole house of Ahab shall perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male person both bond and free in Israel. 'I will make the house of Ahab like the house of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, and like the house of Baasha the son of Ahijah. 'The dogs shall eat Jezebel in the territory of Jezreel, and none shall bury her."' Then he opened the door and fled. Now Jehu came out to the servants of his master, and one said to him, "Is all well? Why did this mad fellow come to you?" And he said to them, "You know very well the man and his talk." They said, "It is a lie, tell us now." And he said, "Thus and thus he said to me, 'Thus says the LORD, "I have anointed you king over Israel.""' Then they hurried and each man took his garment and placed it under him on the bare steps, and blew the trumpet, saying, "Jehu is king!" (II Kings 9:1-13) 3. By the effect produced in the anointing, the person or thing became holy and sacred. Fundamentally, the anointing was an act of God (I Samuel 10:1) and the word anointed was used metaphorically to mean the bestowal of divine favour (Psalm 23:5; 92:10) or the appointment to a special place or function in the purpose of God (Psalm 105:15; Isaiah 45:1). Jesus stood in the offices of priest, prophet and king and was fully Gods "anointed one". An important point to note is that Jesus was anointed with the Holy Spirit (Isaiah 61:1) figuratively styled the "oil of gladness" (Psalm 45:7; Hebrews 1:9). The term "Messiah" is at the centre of the New Testament understanding of Jesus and has become a name for him - the Greek term xristoj (christos), "Anointed One", translating the Hebrew term hvwm (mashiach) which is rendered in our English Bibles as "Christ" and "Messiah" respectively. When considering the term "Messiah" it is important to understand that Jesus was not the only one who claimed to be the Jewish Messiah, and that the majority of Jewish people in Jesus time were expecting the Messiah to be a political agent who would become king and free Israel from Roman oppression. Jesus, in fact, was reluctant to be publicly identified as "the Messiah". When Peter exclaimed, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God", He replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by may father in heaven" (Matthew 16:16-17), but warned his disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Christ (Matthew 15:20). Jesus wanted to avoid the term because it carried connotations of political and military leadership which were not part of His kingdom activities in His first coming and which detracted from the cross. This is also evident in Jesus dealing with demons. Luke 4:41 records demons fleeing, with Jesus not permitting them to speak because they knew He was the Christ. Jesus anointing is particularly described in two passages, "The Spirit of the LORD is upon me, because he anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, to proclaim the favorable year of the LORD." (Luke 4:18-19) "You know of Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed Him with the Holy Spirit and with power, and how He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him. (Acts 10:38). The anointing upon Him was such that it became a name for Him. In the Acts and Epistles He was not called "Jesus Son of Man" or any other thing, but "Jesus Christ" - "Jesus the Messiah". He was also unique in that He did not cease to be the Messiah when He died on the cross, because there He perfected salvation, rose from the dead and ascended into the Fathers presence where He is still Gods Messiah. The anointing on Christian believers is particularly described in three passages, Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God (II Corinthians 1:21). But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you all know (I John 2:20). As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him (I John 2:27). The anointing that Christians receive is different to that in the Old Testament in two respects. Firstly, all believers have an anointing. Secondly, the anointing is with the Holy Spirit. That believers have "an anointing from the Holy One" indicates that this anointing renders them holy, separating them to God. Just as the pillar Jacob anointed became a house of God, so too the believer has become a temple of God. Further, the Holy Spirit enables one to have knowledge of God just as Jesus explained that the Holy Spirit would teach all things. Most importantly, though, the anointing is an equipping for service. All Christians have this anointing, and all Christians have the Holy Spirit. What is this service? Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation (II Corinthians 5:17-19). What did Jesus instruct his followers to do? And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." (Matthew 28:18-20). God has not left us unaided in this task, however, Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass (I Thessalonians 5:24). Not only will He bring His word to pass, but also He has given us His anointing for the task - the Holy Spirit, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth (Acts 1:8). God has given us an anointing. This anointing is the Holy Spirit. This anointing is for service. We have the ministry of reconciliation and have been commissioned to bring the nations to Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit. In conclusion, following is every verse in Scripture that directly refers to the anointing. Genesis 31:13 'I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed a pillar, where you made a vow to Me; now arise, leave this land, and return to the land of your birth."' Exodus 25:6 oil for lighting, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, Exodus 28:41 "You shall put them on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him; and you shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, that they may serve Me as priests. Exodus 29:7 "Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. Exodus 29:21 "Then you shall take some of the blood that is on the altar and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron and on his garments and on his sons and on his sons' garments with him; so he and his garments shall be consecrated, as well as his sons and his sons' garments with him. Exodus 29:29 "The holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him, that in them they may be anointed and ordained. Exodus 29:36 "Each day you shall offer a bull as a sin offering for atonement, and you shall purify the altar when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to consecrate it. Exodus 30:25 "You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. Exodus 30:26 "With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, Exodus 30:30 "You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me. Exodus 30:31 "You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, 'This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. Exodus 31:11 the anointing oil also, and the fragrant incense for the holy place, they are to make them according to all that I have commanded you." Exodus 35:8 and oil for lighting, and spices for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense, Exodus 35:15 and the altar of incense and its poles, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, and the screen for the doorway at the entrance of the tabernacle; Exodus 35:28 and the spice and the oil for the light and for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense. Exodus 37:29 And he made the holy anointing oil and the pure, fragrant incense of spices, the work of a perfumer. Exodus 39:38 and the gold altar, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, and the veil for the doorway of the tent; Exodus 40:9 "Then you shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and shall consecrate it and all its furnishings; and it shall be holy. Exodus 40:10 "You shall anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar, and the altar shall be most holy. Exodus 40:11 "You shall anoint the laver and its stand, and consecrate it. Exodus 40:13 "You shall put the holy garments on Aaron and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may minister as a priest to Me. Exodus 40:15 and you shall anoint them even as you have anointed their father, that they may minister as priests to Me; and their anointing will qualify them for a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations." Leviticus 4:3 if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer to the LORD a bull without defect as a sin offering for the sin he has committed. Leviticus 4:5 'Then the anointed priest is to take some of the blood of the bull and bring it to the tent of meeting, Leviticus 4:16 'Then the anointed priest is to bring some of the blood of the bull to the tent of meeting; Leviticus 6:20 "This is the offering which Aaron and his sons are to present to the LORD on the day when he is anointed; the tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening. Leviticus 6:22 "The anointed priest who will be in his place among his sons shall offer it. By a permanent ordinance it shall be entirely offered up in smoke to the LORD. Leviticus 7:36 'These the LORD had commanded to be given them from the sons of Israel in the day that He anointed them. It is their due forever throughout their generations."' Leviticus 8:2 "Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments and the anointing oil and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams and the basket of unleavened bread, Leviticus 8:10 Moses then took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them. Leviticus 8:11 He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, to consecrate them. Leviticus 8:12 Then he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron's head and anointed him, to consecrate him. Leviticus 8:30 So Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood which was on the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron, on his garments, on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him; and he consecrated Aaron, his garments, and his sons, and the garments of his sons with him. Leviticus 10:7 "You shall not even go out from the doorway of the tent of meeting, or you will die; for the LORD'S anointing oil is upon you." So they did according to the word of Moses. Leviticus 16:32 "So the priest who is anointed and ordained to serve as priest in his father's place shall make atonement: he shall thus put on the linen garments, the holy garments, Leviticus 21:10 'The priest who is the highest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured and who has been consecrated to wear the garments, shall not uncover his head nor tear his clothes; Leviticus 21:12 nor shall he go out of the sanctuary nor profane the sanctuary of his God, for the consecration of the anointing oil of his God is on him; I am the LORD. Numbers 3:3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom he ordained to serve as priests. Numbers 4:16 "The responsibility of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest is the oil for the light and the fragrant incense and the continual grain offering and the anointing oil -- the responsibility of all the tabernacle and of all that is in it, with the sanctuary and its furnishings." Numbers 7:1 Now on the day that Moses had finished setting up the tabernacle, he anointed it and consecrated it with all its furnishings and the altar and all its utensils; he anointed them and consecrated them also. Numbers 7:10 The leaders offered the dedication offering for the altar when it was anointed, so the leaders offered their offering before the altar. Numbers 7:84 This was the dedication offering for the altar from the leaders of Israel when it was anointed: twelve silver dishes, twelve silver bowls, twelve gold pans, Numbers 7:88 and all the oxen for the sacrifice of peace offerings 24 bulls, all the rams 60, the male goats 60, the male lambs one year old 60. This was the dedication offering for the altar after it was anointed. Numbers 35:25 'The congregation shall deliver the manslayer from the hand of the blood avenger, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge to which he fled; and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil. Deuteronomy 28:40 "You shall have olive trees throughout your territory but you will not anoint yourself with the oil, for your olives will drop off. Judges 9:8 "Once the trees went forth to anoint a king over them, and they said to the olive tree, 'Reign over us!' Judges 9:15 "The bramble said to the trees, 'If in truth you are anointing me as king over you, come and take refuge in my shade; but if not, may fire come out from the bramble and consume the cedars of Lebanon.' Ruth 3:3 "Wash yourself therefore, and anoint yourself and put on your best clothes, and go down to the threshing floor; but do not make yourself known to the man until he has finished eating and drinking. 1 Samuel 2:10 "Those who contend with the LORD will be shattered; Against them He will thunder in the heavens, The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; And He will give strength to His king, And will exalt the horn of His anointed." 1 Samuel 2:35 'But I will raise up for Myself a faithful priest who will do according to what is in My heart and in My soul; and I will build him an enduring house, and he will walk before My anointed always. 1 Samuel 9:16 "About this time tomorrow I will send you a man from the land of Benjamin, and you shall anoint him to be prince over My people Israel; and he will deliver My people from the hand of the Philistines. For I have regarded My people, because their cry has come to Me." 1 Samuel 10:1 Then Samuel took the flask of oil, poured it on his head, kissed him and said, "Has not the LORD anointed you a ruler over His inheritance? 1 Samuel 12:3 "Here I am; bear witness against me before the LORD and His anointed. Whose ox have I taken, or whose donkey have I taken, or whom have I defrauded? Whom have I oppressed, or from whose hand have I taken a bribe to blind my eyes with it? I will restore it to you." 1 Samuel 12:5 He said to them, "The LORD is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day that you have found nothing in my hand." And they said, "He is witness." 1 Samuel 15:1 Then Samuel said to Saul, "The LORD sent me to anoint you as king over His people, over Israel; now therefore, listen to the words of the LORD. 1 Samuel 15:17 Samuel said, "Is it not true, though you were little in your own eyes, you were made the head of the tribes of Israel? And the LORD anointed you king over Israel, 1 Samuel 16:3 "You shall invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do; and you shall anoint for Me the one whom I designate to you." 1 Samuel 16:12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with beautiful eyes and a handsome appearance. And the LORD said, "Arise, anoint him; for this is he." 1 Samuel 16:13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. And Samuel arose and went to Ramah. 1 Samuel 16:6 When they entered, he looked at Eliab and thought, "Surely the LORD'S anointed is before Him." 1 Samuel 24:6 So he said to his men, "Far be it from me because of the LORD that I should do this thing to my lord, the LORD'S anointed, to stretch out my hand against him, since he is the LORD'S anointed." 1 Samuel 24:10 "Behold, this day your eyes have seen that the LORD had given you today into my hand in the cave, and some said to kill you, but my eye had pity on you; and I said, 'I will not stretch out my hand against my lord, for he is the LORD'S anointed.' 1 Samuel 26:9 But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD'S anointed and be without guilt?" 1 Samuel 26:11 "The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD'S anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head and the jug of water, and let us go." 1 Samuel 26:16 "This thing that you have done is not good. As the LORD lives, all of you must surely die, because you did not guard your lord, the LORD'S anointed. And now, see where the king's spear is and the jug of water that was at his head." 1 Samuel 26:23 "The LORD will repay each man for his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the LORD delivered you into my hand today, but I refused to stretch out my hand against the LORD'S anointed. 2 Samuel 1:14 Then David said to him, "How is it you were not afraid to stretch out your hand to destroy the LORD'S anointed?" 2 Samuel 1:16 David said to him, "Your blood is on your head, for your mouth has testified against you, saying, 'I have killed the LORD'S anointed."' 2 Samuel 1:21 "O mountains of Gilboa, Let not dew or rain be on you, nor fields of offerings; For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, The shield of Saul, not anointed with oil. 2 Samuel 2:4 Then the men of Judah came and there anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, "It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul." 2 Samuel 2:7 "Now therefore, let your hands be strong and be valiant; for Saul your lord is dead, and also the house of Judah has anointed me king over them." 2 Samuel 3:39 "I am weak today, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah are too difficult for me. May the LORD repay the evildoer according to his evil." 2 Samuel 5:3 So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a covenant with them before the LORD at Hebron; then they anointed David king over Israel. 2 Samuel 5:17 When the Philistines heard that they had anointed David king over Israel, all the Philistines went up to seek out David; and when David heard of it, he went down to the stronghold. 2 Samuel 12:7 Nathan then said to David, "You are the man! Thus says the LORD God of Israel, 'It is I who anointed you king over Israel and it is I who delivered you from the hand of Saul. 2 Samuel 12:20 So David arose from the ground, washed, anointed himself, and changed his clothes; and he came into the house of the LORD and worshiped. Then he came to his own house, and when he requested, they set food before him and he ate. 2 Samuel 14:2 So Joab sent to Tekoa and brought a wise woman from there and said to her, "Please pretend to be a mourner, and put on mourning garments now, and do not anoint yourself with oil, but be like a woman who has been mourning for the dead many days; 2 Samuel 19:10 "However, Absalom, whom we anointed over us, has died in battle. Now then, why are you silent about bringing the king back?" 2 Samuel 19:21 But Abishai the son of Zeruiah said, "Should not Shimei be put to death for this, because he cursed the LORD'S anointed?" 2 Samuel 22:51 "He is a tower of deliverance to His king, And shows lovingkindness to His anointed, To David and his descendants forever." 2 Samuel 23:1 Now these are the last words of David. David the son of Jesse declares, The man who was raised on high declares, The anointed of the God of Jacob, And the sweet psalmist of Israel, 1 Kings 1:34 "Let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there as king over Israel, and blow the trumpet and say, 'Long live King Solomon!' 1 Kings 1:39 Zadok the priest then took the horn of oil from the tent and anointed Solomon.
