The 'Rocky River' is where Tony has his Hereford cattle property. The 'Rocky River' (God's Own Country) is also known as the Timbarra River. The 'Rocky' is in a picturesque valley that drops 300m from the surrounding countryside. To reach the river you pass through a small tropical rainforest. The granite rocks in the area contain gold. This means that mining companies are always attempting one scheme or another. The most recent attempt is that of Ross Mining who have large mining leases on the western environmental rich plateau.
One of Tony's huts, nicknamed 'the barge', is a relic of a past era. During the depression, miners dredged a nearby creek for gold. After the miners left, the 'barge' was moved to dry land where it was mounted on stumps.
'On The Timbarra' |
The artist, Tom Roberts, while making his way from Yugilibar, across the Bulldog Range in the mid 1890s, to the Timbarra Goldfields took time out to paint a scene depicting life during that time. |
Recently a camel train was observed passing through the valley. It may be noted that horses do not like camels so that Tony was lucky he was an experienced rider! Life at the Rocky remains as it did in days gone by... droughts, floods, out-door cooking and transport by horse.
